Trolling 45, it's EASY.
Part of that is due to the high number of pass rushing snaps Allen has participated in. For the last three years he's ranked first each year in the number of pass rushing snaps he's played in. In 2010 he was 4th, in 2009 he was 9th, in 2008 he was tied for 2nd, and in 2007 he was down to 15th.
If you look at his pass rush productivity number where hits and hurries are also counted in and then factored in with the number of pass rush snaps a player got, it doesn't look quite as impressive for him. Here are his ranks for 4-3 DEs when you factor that in:
2013 - 28th out of 37 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
2012 - 16th out of 43 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
2011 - 8th out of 41 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
2010 - 13th out of 34 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
2009 - 9th out of 43 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
2008 - T-2nd out of 44 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
2007 - 15th out of 44 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
I don't want to get too wrapped up into looking at this type of number because there are so many schematic and outside factors that go into painting this picture but what I solely would like to point out that Allen's sack numbers are high but part of that is due to the high number of rushing snaps he gets and when you compare them to others and factor it in on a per snap basis, his pass rushing ability doesn't look quite the same and he's actually starting to fall off a bit in recent times. Playing next to better talent could obviously help and boost him back up some, but I think all of these things are things that should be thought of when looking at him.
Well, this information clearly states that Allen only been a top 5 DE in the league only ONCE in his entire career, according to this rank. Clearly he has been over rated his entire career. Except that one year, 2008.
