Part of that is due to the high number of pass rushing snaps Allen has participated in. For the last three years he's ranked first each year in the number of pass rushing snaps he's played in. In 2010 he was 4th, in 2009 he was 9th, in 2008 he was tied for 2nd, and in 2007 he was down to 15th.

If you look at his pass rush productivity number where hits and hurries are also counted in and then factored in with the number of pass rush snaps a player got, it doesn't look quite as impressive for him. Here are his ranks for 4-3 DEs when you factor that in:

2013 - 28th out of 37 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
2012 - 16th out of 43 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
2011 - 8th out of 41 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
2010 - 13th out of 34 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
2009 - 9th out of 43 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
2008 - T-2nd out of 44 qualifying 4-3 DEs.
2007 - 15th out of 44 qualifying 4-3 DEs.

I don't want to get too wrapped up into looking at this type of number because there are so many schematic and outside factors that go into painting this picture but what I solely would like to point out that Allen's sack numbers are high but part of that is due to the high number of rushing snaps he gets and when you compare them to others and factor it in on a per snap basis, his pass rushing ability doesn't look quite the same and he's actually starting to fall off a bit in recent times. Playing next to better talent could obviously help and boost him back up some, but I think all of these things are things that should be thought of when looking at him.

Well, this information clearly states that Allen only been a top 5 DE in the league only ONCE in his entire career, according to this rank. Clearly he has been over rated his entire career. Except that one year, 2008.

????????????

It shows his efficiency is shit. And he is on the decline and not that big of a threat anymore. As a 3 rd pass rush specialist it will help.

Edit: Sorry meant to quote the Seahawk post.

His efficiency may be shit but have we compared his pass rush totals to other teams pass rush totals on efficiency level? If you get his totals plus his unsuccessful pass rush numbers and that is better than other teams efficient player plus backup totals, it isn't a big deal. Put that on a great defense and it could mean more than some are making it out to be.

Yep. I clearly said that. Pass rush is clearly the ONLY thing that matters in a D-lineman.

Old or not. Allen seems to get the better of Staley a little too often for my liking. I'm not gunna dismiss this signing. I think it was a good move for the Seahawks.

Really hope he's worn down and doesn't spring to life in this new role. Hope they just overpaid for a situational 3rd down pass rusher who can't get to the QB anymore, but if the 49ers made a similar move I'd be very happy. At least this will be a short term production move.

I dont think I would have been happy had the 49ers signed him. If tbe 49ers were going to spend money on free agents, wpuld ratber them use.money for secondary or WR. Not on a defensive tackle.

I was really upset when they re-signed Bennett, but I'm actually happy they signed Jared Allen. I always thought he could be the bust of the offseason (long-term). Hope he signed for a ton of up-front money.

That said... Seattle's defense: Ouch.

Meanwhile, the Niners' defense: :noidea: Taking applications for starting CB job. :drink:

agree, wouldn`t want us to sign him for `big` money. so if Seattle wants to spend for a declining pass rusher, go ahead. we can only see how the numbers play out?

i DO feel Allen can get some sacks, just that he`ll likely be over paid for them.

I suspect Seattle offered significantly less than what Allen wanted otherwise he would have signed the first time. I wouldn't be surprised if it is a one year deal either. The Seahawks have to resign Sherman, Wilson, and Thomas. Schneider is not a dumb guy. He is not going to tie up a bunch of money long-term to a declining DT when they have a number of their core to resign to big deals. I suspect they view Allen as a one or two year rental.
