All of the focus on a handgun ban is just taking focus away from what’s actually causing gun crimes and where those guns are really coming from.
And let's be honest, 99.99% of our population has no need for assault rifles and handguns. None. I have no qualms about inconveniencing the segment of the population that thinks these things are cool.
Canada's rural population is almost 7 million. Plenty of farmers and ranchers live pretty far from the nearest police station. I think they're entitled to a handgun for protective purposes. Most illegal guns were at one time legal guns. If you ban assault rifles there WILL be less of those available to criminals. Some will still be illegally imported but it's irresponsible to just throw your hands in the air and say that there is nothing we can do. This is a way to further squeeze the criminals supply of guns. It's a not a cure-all but it's a part of the solution.

As for causing crime? Well of course that's more complex then simple gun laws. Poverty and crime are omnipresent, but you have to do all you can to reduce the risks to your citizens. This is a step towards that.

If you want a quick fix to squeeze criminals of guns, Toronto police stopped carding in 2017 and gun crimes & murders skyrocketed in 2018 and 2019. Peel police stopped likewise in 2017 and after investigating 11 murders in 2016 in 2019 there were 28. Might be a good place to start before embarking on a nationwide expedition to fix a problem that may or may not exist.
