Padres have been shopping both Shields and Kimbrel.

Shields is still owed the bulk of his contract over the next 3 years (63M), and they really want to move him before they have to pay that. He is certainly overpaid. But if we took him, contract and all, maybe we could get Kimbrel for not a lot, prospect-wise.

Shields would probably slate in as our #3 right now and Kimbrel would clearly be our closer, moving everyone in the pen down a slot (with Kontos and Strickland being the mid-inning closer with KCYa manning 8th inning duty and Romo and Lopez being the specialists. Vogey, Biggie and JA would be the long men. Of course, two of these guys would not make the roster, but that would be 9 solid arms competing for 7 spots.

Maybe if the Giants include Strickland in the deal, the prospect cost would be even less...

Do you want to be facing Strick 19 times a year for the forseeable future?

I sure don't.

I just don't see why we need to mess things up so much with this pen. Casilla will be fine and if not we can always do closer by committee, Bochy is literally the best in the game at managing pens.

If we eat all of the Shields contract we may only have to give up Beede + filler. I don't even know if I'd do that, but it's like turing Beede into a sure thing, but an old expensive one. We'd still need a #5 next year, but those aren't hard to come by.

Strickland is not a kid. I would rather have Kimbrel than Strickland...

Shields is a 3 on this team. If he costs Beede, I hang up the phone.

Beede is for sure a future 1/2?
I see him as a Cain-like. 5 years of free Cain...

Better than 3 years of Cain money, but good Zito-like performance (I expect him to be better than Zito, but I couldn't think of a better comparison)

Even if Beede is just a future #4, no way the giants should give him up who is still under team control for a 33 years old #3 that still owes $65M.

As a free agent the past season, Shields had trouble getting the money he wanted. Now that his performance declined a bit, I don't see how the Padres can dump his salary and still fetching a top prospect.

That's why I am proposing taking both Shields AND Kimbrel.

They took Upton so they could get Kimbrel. We will take Shields to get Kimbrel.

I dont remember who it was, but someone mentioned Victorino as a potential target.

Thank God that one is off the board now...

Giants not interested in acquiring a mediocre pitcher -- either SP or bullpen.
Talking to Tiggers about Price, Philth about Hamels, and Reds about Chapman.

This is the correct approach IMO. No Leake, no Scrabble.

I'd add Cashner if we could get him for a reasonable price. Doubtful though.

Prob with Cashner is that dude cant stay on the field. He is an Ace-level pitcher, though. Probably the best pitcher no one has ever heard of.

Andrew Cashner Statistics and History | Baseball-Reference.com

I dunno. Maybe you saw him once or twice and he happened to look good. But his stats just don't confirm anything more than that he really wouldn't move the needle. IMHO.
He was the primary get for the Padres in the Rizzo trade, so he has some pedigree.

Like I said, he has had a hard time staying on the field. His '13 and '14 were pretty dominant for a guy getting his feet wet. They were just abbreviated due to injuries (my acknowledged knock on him and why I would be very hesitant to pay a high price for him).

I have a hard time judging any Padre pitcher by their performance this year. The team has been a complete cluster with the total clubhouse overhaul and the pitchers have had to deal with HORRIBLE defense behind them (not just errors, but lack of "great plays" to assist them. This sort of thing wears on a pitchers psyche which would lead to sub-standard performances across the board.

Would I rate him as an Ace right now? No. Do I think he has the potential to be at least a near-Ace in the coming years? Yes.

Ken Rosenthal reports Giants making a hard push for Hamels. But will have hard time matching any offer Texas can make

Spitballing...

Belt and Beede

for

Howard and Hamels

I think that blows up the offense too much. We have a good thing going, and making a BIG trade like that is not a good idea. But your thoughts?
