I see what you're asking. Aoki activated today; Oxy to DL. You've got two choices as I see it: DFA Max (I wouldn't do that), or fix the 13 arm situation. JA back to the DL? Alternatively, they could send EA down.

I suspect that they won't get Davis at all, but if they do, they'd ship out an arm (Tron?).
Unless they include part of the 25-man to Detroit in the trade, they would have to lose someone. EA does not have any options left, so he can't be "sent down". He would need to be DFA'd, clear waivers, AND accept the assignment to Sacto. He MAY clear waivers, but he is completely blocked here, so there is little chance he would accept the assignment, I think.

With the inability of our starters (save for Heston, really) to go past the 6th inning, we can't drop to 12 arms. Simply too many innings need to be eaten.

To tie in the SP discussion here, maybe we need to get in on the Hamels/Cueto discussions. Another horse would do wonders for the roster configuration.

I love Rajai....

Though a lot of that is because I remember the Morris trade and I loved his speed/personality/style of play, became one of my favorites.

Has the .337 wOBA versus lefties, .361 the year before. Love the speed.

But as others have said....where does he fit in as a bench OF?

Blanco is better than Davis and Blanco's best role is as a great 4th OF. maxwell a nice 5th OF.

Even if we DL Pagan and Aoki comes back.

Guess in that case, Blanco starts versus righties and Davis starts versus lefties.

This. That's how I see us using him.

I guess my point is that I would rather have Maxwell (with his power and defense) for free over Davis (and his BA and speed) at the cost of 2M and prospects.

Now let's look at this from a different angle...

The deal is made like this...

Maxwell for Davis. No prospects, no salary relief in either direction.

Would the Giants make this deal? Would I make this deal?

Personally, I think Maxwell is a better fit. So ultimately, I would say no. I am likely in the minority.

The reports on BT's hips are not good. Having had two hip replacements myself, I cannot imagine what his pitching style has done to his hips. He did seem, early on, to be very flexible, almost like a gymnast. But there are fewer and fewer 30 year old gymnasts with that sort of supple flexibility. I hope he can come back, but "degenerative hips" sounds downright scary.

The ominous news about Tim Lincecum's hip condition - McCovey Chronicles
I had arthroscopic hip surgery years ago by Dr. Guanche at S.C.O.I. and was referred there by Dr. Kvitne at Kerlan-Jobe. He cleaned up the joint and that let me continue leading an active life. He also did both of Josh Shipp's hips at UCLA.

From Latimes in 2007:
"The surgery went very well, and Josh should be able to begin his rehabilitation next week," Guanche said in a statement. "It is a very common procedure among elite-level athletes such as Josh. I have performed this surgery on NBA, NFL and NHL athletes, and all have returned to their high level of competition."

The point is if Tim's cartilage is toast I don't think there is much to be done. However if there is some tearing or fraying or some cysts, he can get help. Oh, and steroids, both oral and injection can provide remarkable help from inflammation. Let's hope Tim can get back soon and be the pitcher he was in his first 8 starts this season: era 2.08!!!!

oh, I'd make that deal. But the Tiggers would not.

Aoki not getting activated yet. He will play AT LEAST one more game for Sacto.

At one time or another, we have all wrung our hands about our hitting with RISP. But it turns out we lead the NL in runs with RISP, and we have a .782 OPS with RISP, good for 2nd in the league, and hit .289 as a team, good for 2nd in the NL.

2015 MLB Team Batting Stats - Major League Baseball - ESPN

(I don't count stats from the AL - it's not real baseball, and it's often played in high-school sized playing fields.)

Papelbon update:

Nationals Have Discussed Papelbon With Phillies - MLB Trade Rumors

"Papelbon’s market reportedly shrinking"

"While Washington is hesitant to take on mid-season payroll, says Rosenthal, the sides could line up if the Phillies covered a big piece of his remaining deal."
So, if Paps is owed the balance of $13mm this year, and $13mm next year, how much would the Phillies have to cover before we got interested, and assuming they didn't want any top-shelf pieces?

For example, if they wanted Osich and Williamson, and gave us $10mm cash, would we do that?

(As an aside re Papelbon being a clubhouse problem, I might be a problem, too, if I was on the Phillies.)

Sources: Mets have discussed Zack Wheeler in trade talks - NY Daily News

As written above, Mets have discussed trading Zach Wheeler.

Remember SF tried to acquire him in offseason. Could they try again at discounted price?

While it's not a stretch-drive run trade that will help this year, I could see this as buying a lottery ticket for a lower-level prospect.

But the Mets think they are contenders this year, so they want something that will help them now. So this won't work for us.

Yeah, ultimately it's unlikely, the thought just popped into my head and shared.

But there were stories of him being a DB with Boston as well. These stories are not new.

This offence is potent.

The Giants lead the NL in...

Runs
OBP
BA
Hits

While they don't have a lot of power, it is still very respectable...

79 HR (9th)
167 2B (4th)
25 3B (3rd)
.410 SLG (3rd)
.740 OPS (3rd)

We have Casilla with a 3.15 ERA and 4 blown saves. Romo has a 4.55 ERA. These are not the numbers of the 8th and 9th inning guys on a championship contender.

I am willing to take a chance on the psyche of Papelbon, given the leadership of Bochy, Pence, Posey and Bum.

Getting a player is not like buying a car. There aren't 10 million of them, and you can't custom order. He has some warts, to be sure. But we could use a proven championship-caliber closer, push the other relievers back an inning, and I'll bet it would be affordable in terms of players and money, esp with the Phillies willing to kick in some cash.

If we could get him for nothing, we would take him, right? Now it's just a matter of working the right deal.

Hamels and Price are the only big pieces left on the shelf, and Hamels has been heavily rumored to go to the Rangers (not sure why they are buying).

Is it possible that the dogs will get shutout at the deadline?

I'd try for Hamels just for preventing him from going to the Dogs.

Price may be too expensive and too hard to sign. Plus, Hamels knows the NL.

Cueto has had for 2 AAA prospects and a AA prospect. We have some up and coming bully arms, and Hacktor when the Susser comes back.

I tried to equate who we have to match the haul the Reds got...

Reed = Blach
Lamb = Blackburn
Finnigan = ???

We really dont have an equivalent to Finnegan. Maybe Mejia (although Mejia does not have the MLB experience that Finnegan has).

Padres have been shopping both Shields and Kimbrel.

Shields is still owed the bulk of his contract over the next 3 years (63M), and they really want to move him before they have to pay that. He is certainly overpaid. But if we took him, contract and all, maybe we could get Kimbrel for not a lot, prospect-wise.

Shields would probably slate in as our #3 right now and Kimbrel would clearly be our closer, moving everyone in the pen down a slot (with Kontos and Strickland being the mid-inning closer with KCYa manning 8th inning duty and Romo and Lopez being the specialists. Vogey, Biggie and JA would be the long men. Of course, two of these guys would not make the roster, but that would be 9 solid arms competing for 7 spots.

Maybe if the Giants include Strickland in the deal, the prospect cost would be even less...
