If we're thinking of trading Beede, don't we make him the center of a package for a starter, which we need more than a reliever?

In the abstract, yes. However, you have to factor in what the relative markets for SP and RP are. RPs are more plentiful and thus less expensive. Also, if giving up Beede lets you hang onto your other top prospects that's a consideration too.

Too much we don't know, but I'd be shocked if we pick up a SP given our logjam.

Agree, which is why I will be surprised if they make any move at all, even for a reliever. And I will approve.

I guess we'd include a current bully arm in any deal to get Chapman or Papelbon? Because someone would have to go.

Plus the team giving up a closer would likely want one or two in return.

Kazmir to the Stros for 2 prospects. If we were gonna get a rental SP that was the guy I wanted (lefty). Now who? Samardjiza?

Both of the prospects they got are in A ball. Trading a top piece for 2 kids that are 2-3 years away? Risky trade, IMHO.

That said, I am completely ignorant about the two kids. Maye they are both "can't miss" and have super-high ceilings. I dont know.

I don't think either is that highly rated. What is becoming clearer to me is that the market for SP is soft. BB jumped early so as to get SOMETHING for Kazmir, as he didn't want the comp pick (A'ss are poor at drafting talent; they'd rather have other systems prospects).

Defensively challenged, extremely fast, rental. Souldn't cost much. Is he needed?
OPS of .733 so far this year. Only -0.1 dWAR. If the price was low, I would understand this.

If Pagan is going to be like he has been the rest of the way, I could get behind this.

Assume we get Davis (for discussion purposes).

I guess that means we DFA Mad Max? And you would have Davis start in center over Blanco??

Max is our current #5, and he is doing well. I do not see the point in trading for another #5 OFer. Get me a solid #4 (to act like our #5) or a solid Util. No starters needed.

As for pitching, need is there, but price ("p" not "P") is an absolute factor.

To be fair, Davis is much more of a #4 than a #5. He'd be a #5 on the Giants when Oxy/Herk/Seaweed/Shark are healthy, but he's a 100 OPS+ and 1.5 WAR guy which are #4 numbers.

Also, to be fair, Oxy has been 77 OPS+ and -1.1 WAR this year, which is a #6 or #7's numbers. These numbers are cumulative, and he's been quite hurt, so they could certainly change to the positive by years end, but Davis looks like an upgrade.

For reference, the G's OF in OPS + and WAR
Pence: 133, 0.9
Pagan: 77, -1.1
Aoki: 120, 1.7
Blanco: 129, 0.7
Maxwell: 81, 0.2

Recall that WAR is cumulative and generally increases as the year goes on. OPS+ is based on comparison to league average and is not cumulative.

I'd rather go after our old friend Shane Victorino.

As it stands, I don't see the need anyway though. I think it would be okay to stand pat with what we have, and if our depth is tested once again, we'd have August to acquire someone (hell, Victorino is a prime August-waiver candidate).

Most of the WAR he accumulates is with his bat and his wheels, and definitely not his defense. Would he get enough ABs to be valuable, assuming he's a 5th OF? Worth giving something up and punting Maxwell?

We did see how Darren Ford influenced a few games late in 2010, so it's possible.

Aside from the fact he'd never fit in the clubhouse, he's 77, 0.7. Not an upgrade even to an injured Pagan.

Those are the questions Bobby Evans has to answer. Also, how many innings would he get after rosters expand and JCP comes up to play D?

I wouldn't expect anything out of Perez. He's had an atrocious year, making way to many mental mistakes and has battled injuries.

If we went out and got someone, I'd hope they could out-play Perez.

But that's not the issue in August, since JCP won't be here. I'm talking in Sept, where he'd be a defensive replacement only. However, your larger point is taken: it'd be Lollis, not JCP.

Maybe we DL Pagan thru Aug?
