This can never be said too much.

But with a gun to your head and you have to, for the rest of your life, rely on ONE stat...

OPS+ is the first one I go to. It has its problems, but it is a good judge of offensive production.

yes, but a HR is not twice as important as a double, a triple is not 3 X as important as a single...etc...
OPS gives these approximate values...

Single = 2 units
Double = 3 units
Triple = 4 units
HR = 5 units

Your calculation of the comparison is false.

ummm... no it doesn't unless of course your PA is equal to BA

OPS = OBP + SLG

so basically...
Single: 1 + 1 = 2
Double: 1 + 2 = 3
Triple: 1 + 3 = 4
HR: 1 + 4 = 5

and...
walk: 1 + 0 = 1
sac: (-1) + 0 = -1 (the "-1" is actually just an increase in the denominator)
SB: 0 + 0 = 0

The "approximate" that I stated in my post refers to the different denominators (AB vs PA).

and i am telling you, that you are mathematically wrong... this is just not true...

And it is irrelevant... you knew i was talking about the calculations of SLG.... If you you don't like the calculations of SLG how can you ever agree to the calculations for OPS?? and that is not even talking about the stupid mathematics of OPS where you are adding 2 totally different stats that include different data..

I do believe SLG overvalues HR... therefore i think OPS does too...

It overvalues walks too but that is because of the PA to AB...

The discussion was on OPS, not SLG. SLG is a component of OPS, but OPS does NOT value HRs (and doubles or triples) the way you described.

But misunderstandings aside, SLG does not even try to say who is better. You are trying to answer a question with an answer to a totally different question. SLG simply tells you how many total bases per AB. Period. Nothing more.

As for my math being wrong, it is not wrong. I already gave the caveat of the numbers being APPROXIMATE. If you are saying it is wrong because it is not EXACT, well fine. I pretty much granted that upon the get-go. For you to make that claim, you are just trying to be argumentative. My ROUGH valuations are still MUCH more accurate than the 1:4 estimate for a single:HR you provided.

That makes no sense at all... Again, how can you like how OPS is calculated if you don't agree with SLG... so what if they are 2 different stats... And you are actually making my original point that i was making...

I compared dWAR with OPS saying that they both are calculated poorly or unclearly, but if they look pretty and are showing the results you want then there must be some accuracy... That was all i was trying to say...

Did the coin actually flip in the air, or did you perform an NFL "toss"??

I flipped the coin properly in the air before it landed on the floor....all 3 times.

It was a best of 3 toss....and came down to the 3rd try after 1 heads and 1 tails before finally coming up heads.

I never said I didnt like SLG. I just dont think it is a COMPLETE stat.

You dont like SLG, I hear that. I just dont understand your complaints about it. I think you just dont like HRs, so a stat that is heavily influenced by HRs (SLG) is naturally a stat you would shy away from.

That is silly... Of course i like HRs... Its the arbitrary weight of each hit the bothers me... It clearly overvalues power...
