The Big 12 & AAC would have to rate as the two most offensive-minded conferences, with the vitamin league having the top two teams in total offense in Oklahoma & Oklahoma St., along with #16 Texas Tech & #20 West Virginia; and the American boasting the #' 4-6 teams in Memphis, Central Florida & South Florida, along with SMU at #15. The ACC also has four teams in the top 25, led by Louisville at #3, and followed by Wake Forest, Syracuse & NC State at #'s 17, 23 & 25.

The AAC has the edge in scoring, with UCF & Memphis locking down the top two spots, and USF & SMU coming in at 10th & 12th. The Big 12 has the 3rd & 4th teams in Oklahoma & Oklahoma St., with West Virginia & Texas Tech coming in at 22nd & 23rd.

The B-12 is also the only league with 5 teams in the passing top 25, with Okie Lite & the Sooners ranking #1 & #3; but no Big 12 team cracked the top 25 in rushing, which seems to be the league's achilles heel on offense.

Oklahoma runs the ball very well.

Oklahoma runs the ball very well.

The Homers do run the ball well - at 217.8 ypg & 5.58 ypc - but not well enough to rank in the top 25 in rushing. But, at #27, they are tops in the Big 12. Kansas St. - at 32 - and Okie St. - at 47 - were the only other top 50 rushing teams out of the B12.

The service academies held 3 of the top 4 positions with Army #1, Navy #2 & Air Force #4. Arizona was a surprise at #3, with Georgia Tech at #5. Those were the only teams to rush for more than 300 yards per game. A few other surprises were FAU at #6 with 285.3 yards per game & 6.01 ypc, San Diego St. at 10th, Western Michigan at 21st, and Ohio U. at number 16 with 244.5 ypg & 5.74 yards per carry.

And those are several option teams. Main thing is you need to be in the top 50 and preferably the top 35-40.

If we actually have the #4 defense with the offensive that we return (21 of the 22 on the two-deep), we'll probably win the national title. I find it pretty hard to believe we won't see some drop-off with the loss of talent in the secondary.

Since the initial gist of this post had to do with defense, let's get back to that side of the discussion:

Leading the pack in rushing defense from last season was Alabama at 94.7 ypg, followed by Michigan St. & Wisconsin at 95.3 & 98.4; Washington at 100.8, and TCU at 103.9. Six of the top 25 rushing defenses were from the Big 10, and a surprising 4 were from the Big 12. The SEC had three of the top 25. The best out of the ACC was Clemson at #12.

Leaders in pass defense were Michigan at 150.1 ypg, UT-San Antonio at 160.1, Tennessee at 161.7, Clemson at 161.9, and Wisconsin at 163.6. The SEC had 6 of the top 25 teams, followed by the Big 10, ACC, and Mountain West with 4 teams each. Washington St. was the top Pac-12 team at #9, but the next best Pac team was UCLA at #31. The Big 12's top team was TCU at #70.

In total defense, Alabama again led the way at 260.4 ypg, followed by Wisconsin (262.1), Michigan (271.0), Clemson (276.7), and UTSA (287.8). The SEC & Big 10 each had 5 teams in the top 25, followed by the ACC & MWC with four teams each. The best showing out of the Pac was Washington at #9 & Washington St. at #16. The only Big 12 team in the top 25 was TCU at #19.

As far as scoring goes, Alabama was tops at 11.9 ppg, followed by Clemson (13.6), Wisconsin (13.9), Virginia Tech (14.8), and Washington (16.1). The best of the Big 12 was TCU at 19.0 ponts per game. Eight Big 10 teams were in the top 25, with 5 from the SEC, and 3 each from the ACC & MWC.

Top 10 projected 2018 defenses per 247.

Projecting college football's 10 best defenses in 2018

Four from the SEC:
10 - Florida * Florida will not be a top 10 defensive team.
9 - LSU * LSU could be in the top 10, or Auburn (or both.
8 - Georgia *possibly a top 5 team
2 - Alabama

Four from the B1G:
7 - Michigan State *might be closer to 9th or 10th
6 - Ohio State *might be closer to 9th or 10th
4 - Wisconsin * Badgers should have the best defense in the Big 10
3 - Michigan

One from the PAC:
5 - Washington maybe closer to 7th or 8th

One from the ACC:
1 - Clemson *probably top 5, but not top two

None from the video game P-5 conference. * I'm in agreement here, but TCU might crack the top 15 or 20.

:cheer2:

Here's the way I see the Top 10 defenses:

1. Wisconsin (maybe Alabama)
2. Alabama
3. Clemson
4. Georgia (possibly Michigan)
5. Michigan
6. Virginia Tech
7. Texas-San Antonio (or Washington)
8. Washington
9. Ohio St. (or Michigan St.)
10. Michigan St.

Others that could break into the Top 10:

LSU, Auburn, Penn St.

Teams that could be in the Top 15:

Fresno St., San Diego St., Troy

Iowa St created some innovative defensive formations last year that Texas stole and really turned their defense around with toward the last half of the year. I look for defense to make a comeback using these concepts in the Big 12. Completely confused spread teams. Iowa St didn't have any business having the year they had considering their talent level. Outstanding coaching staff. Some big school is going to steal those guys and win big.

But, back to the OP, talent wise, Georgia probably does have a top 10 defense, but it's a defense that is gonna have a ton of new faces, and I expect it to take it a few games at least before it starts to gel. There was a lot of productive, senior leadership gone off the defense from last year, and while the talent is there to replace it, the experience is not, and a player like Roquan Smith might come along every 10 years for a program, if that.

But I expect to have a more balanced, top tier offense with the best o-line we've had in years.

Ahem, I think you read the Wisconsin blurb by mistake.

You don’t have the QB, bruh.

We don't have Baker Mayfield(neither does Oklahoma this year) but we do have our entire offense coming back except our TE. Last year, Taylor was a freshman, Hornibrook a sophomore, the starting WRs at the end of the season were freshmen. We will definitely have a better offense than last year. Yes, we only finished 50th in total offense(according to CBS). We won't be top tier but I would expect to be closer to top 25 this year.

We were 23rd in points per game. I think we'll do ok.

And besides, this thread is about defense.
