Weren't there a few years where the AP voted on teams BEFORE any bowls were played, and a couple of teams were voted #1 but then lost their bowls?

I get what Aubie's doing, it's all marketing. I think it's dumb but i don't blame them. It's all about the brand these days.

Our 1941 claim is ridiculous, I'll give you that. There was one year where we were crowned champs by some poll but not by others and we were the only undefeated, untied team that year but I think it was ND and some other team that tied in the "NC game"

EDIT: And we don't claim the NC from that year ^^^^

I want to reply, but it'll end up causing the same boring offseason argument that happens every year.

Leave the championships where they lie. If you weren't crowned champs and didn't recognize that you won a championship 50 years ago, what gives you the right too now?

It was that way up until sometime in the 1960's I believe. I know OU won in 1950 and later lost their bowl game. But back then bowl games were considered more like "exhibition games."

I guess if you can't win one legitimately on the field, you might as well claim a fake one because some other team claims a title that Chuck Jones at the Waffle House in Tuscaloosa, AL said they were the best team that year.

I feel the same way. WTF does it matter today that Minnesota went back and claimed a title from 1904? 110 years ago?!? There's not likely to be any people left alive who honestly remember seeing that team play, there was no TV and college football was nowhere near the big deal it has become in the last 30 years.

I remember reading about a hoax that some people pulled off a long time ago, where they created a phantom school called "Plainfield Teachers" that went undedeated, untied, and unscored on for almost an entire season. They kept showing up in the box scores of the newspapers, having beaten other non-existent teams. The plan was to crown them as champs at season's end, but some people outed the jokesters before they could cap it off.

it appears that only in SEC land is winning your own conference championship optional if you wanna claim a national championship. ==> and yes that was a direct shot at alabama.

if the d4 ever split and did a major rules overhaul......i think letting the other schools vote on which NCs count or having some sort of panel settle it would be the best way to go about it. Because this is starting to get ridiculous.

it is not so much the # of times the bama claims a natty that is the source of controversy......

but their decision to flip back & forth between claiming national championships awarded before & after a bowl game.

Im a lifelong Bama fan. Most fans claim 15 but I only claim the 10 Ap/ coaches/BCS national titles. Those should be the only claimed ones
