Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that the second time he was accused also?

Yep, no charges in either case however. First one wasn't criminal charges (which lead many to think money grab), settled out of court. Second one charges were dropped.

The practical effect of this is that, instead of having to provide evidence sufficient to overturn the original conviction like in a normal appeals court, you have the burden of proof residing entirely with the prosecution as in any normal criminal proceeding. So while he has been found guilty, that guilty verdict is more-or-less thrown out when the court agrees to give him a jury trial.

Wow. That's...

Wow.

Remind me when I turn to the dark side and become a supervillian to move to NC.

"Guilty!"
"UHHHH, do over?"
"OK"

This would have happened already if Hardy wasn't such an important player to the Panthers.

Absolutely right. The team dropped the ball by not giving him any suspension at all. Even if they wanted to keep him on the field, they could have hit him with an approximately $800K fine.

Haha, that only applies to misdemeanor convictions. From the article I posted earlier:
Under North Carolina law, defendants convicted of a misdemeanor by a judge can appeal for a jury trial. It’s referred to as a trial de novo, which is Latin for “anew.”

In such cases, the appeals court holds a trial as if no prior trial was held.

Yeah, I just read that. So impact is lessened, but holy cow. That's a crazy way to do things.

I already know when I become a supervillan, I am moving to Albania

You could look at it that Ben is not the one who was not afforded due process, that the victims were. The league (and the media, and twitter...) stepped in, and suddenly the charges got dropped. That seems to happen a lot. So the only plausible explanations are the league in interfering or all the accusers are gold digging whores who crumble when the pressure is on. Which is more likely?

Janay Rice had to explain to the league what happened with Ray sitting right there. And the Ravens trotted her out to apologize for her part in it. And that's just the public side.

What reason is there to believe Ben's college girl was treated any different?

It would seem the Avalanche used that same playbook last year with Varly's issue. Although it was probably easier for them since there was the threat of deportation.

Trust me when I say that I'm not at all calling the women in the Ben case guilty of gold digging (though I would certainly encourage any friend of mine to pursue criminal charges, not a civil suit, as occurred in the first case). It's plainly obvious that money exchanged hands in both those instances.

Again: taking a break from the NFL.

And hoping this AP stuff was just him spanking his kid and someone being offended...but it's too much to hope for that. Even though he lost a son to abuse a year ago.

Most unfortunately, it's a bit more than that. Naturally, the pictures "leaked".

Pretty much no way he gets out of this.

/I'm gonna go and hug my kids.
