That kid is a good pitcher, and he.s been very versatile wherever needed. I think he would be a good starter too, but he probably has more value wearing different hats-- if the Tigers find someone who can do what he does in the pen, then yes, I'd make DS a SP, and with a quickness.

maybe not this year just with the fact they already need BP help. But going into next season if the plan isn't to give him a real shot in the rotation, think it's a big mistake. Can't let yourself fall in love with a versatile RP if he can be a stud SP. IMO

I hear that, and I feel sure he would be a strong SP. That's what I mean, if Detroit can acquire someone to fill that dpot, then he goes straight to the rotation.. little hesitation in that. That's why I can see the better feasibility of him starting next season since the Tigers are likely to get someone off the market this winter-- b/c I'd be just about certain that the Detroit FO can also see the advantage of making Smyly a starter.

Sox traded Brandon Jacobs to the ChiSox for Matt Thornton. This would have excited me a lot more a few years ago. Thornton hasn't been very good over the last few years and his strikeout rate's seen a huge decline. Jacobs is a lottery ticket.

Thornton is decrnyly good.. he's about a 3.80 ERA type pitcher. The Red Sox never acquired him to do eonders.. he's only there to bridge the gap from your starters to your late inning pen. AND, Thornton is a solid 6th/7th inning pitcher most of the time, thank you. Would have had 0 problem with Detroit pulling him.

A 3.80 ERA from a relief pitcher is pretty mediocre.

Yes, I know that Evan.. BUT, may I remind you he was never called upon to come in during the 8th or 9th, your people took him for the 6th and 7th. Those are the innings you needed the help for, and his 3.80 is better than most teams have for that. He has a history of performing well there. He gets his relatively high ERA from that one time in 5 that he gets ripped. If you look him up you'll see that.

oh, I know. I don't hate the trade. I'm just saying Thornton isn't as good as he used to be. There's been hundreds (hell, probably thousands) of prospects just like Jacobs anyway.

Yeah, I mean really though.. you did well there. You know, when Doubront gets pulled in a 5-5 tie with the Yankees and Cano up with 2 outs and a guy on 2nd, at least you can preserve the tie.. PLUS, he pitches the 7th to give your lineup the chance to take a lead. You definitely want that guy.. he's better than anything else you had in those spots. What you gave up was a pittance.. not necessarily for the future, but the present, which is what Boston is playing for-- the here and now!! Perhaps if I put it that way the trade makes more sense.

What's going to be interesting is whether Chase Utley stays in Philly.

A healthy Utley is still a very good player. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case since '09.

I would love Utley in Oaktown, but Beane wouldn't do that. I think we may get Uggla. :noidea:

Y'know what? Uggla may have had the right idea with those contact lenses.

It'll probably never happen, but remember him as a reliever last year? Dominant.

I can see it happening, if its purely a rental for this year, because you know Tim is gonna sign somewhere next year that will guarantee him as a starter.

Everyone seems to be waiting for Garza to get traded and then a plethora of moves will be made with the prospects the teams were offering for Garza.

Seems the most talked about deal is with Texas and part of the trade will be Olt, the 3bman the cubs wanted last year, but got his understudy Villanueva, and then drafted Bryant. You figure texas would take one of the third basemen back, either Vitters or Christian if that happens.

It's being reported that the Rangers won't give up Martin Perez for Garza. Smart move on their part, IMO.

No way do we give up Perez for garza. We've got plenty of other quality prospects, but you cannot have garza.
