I don't necessarily agree with your points, but they are presented well.

One of the things that make this show great is that you are on the edge of your seat while watching because just about any character can die in any episode. It adds to the tension that the characters feel living in their new world.

Beth was a secondary character. She would never be mentioned in the same breath as Rick, Carl, Michone, Darryl, Carrol or, to lessor extents, Maggie, Glenn or Abraham. That makes her character even MORE liable to be "off'd" on a whim.

I think they did a good job since the fall of the prison to make fans care about her. Prior to that, all I remember reading about her is that fans hated her sing-song tendency and could not wait to see her head blown off. Now that it happens, the fans are up in arms. Seems to me like the writers/producers are in a catch-22.

I agree that her death was questionable. The writing on the show has been a bit too soap-opera-ish since Gimple took over, for my taste. But the overall path of the show has been better since he took over, as well. Basically, every ball he hits will not be over the wall. Sometimes he will just hit a double where the runner on 1st gets thrown out at home. Some will like the double, some will get pissed at the baserunning.

Basically, I think it is a good sign for the show as a whole that the fanbase is large enough be able to piss off so many people over an essentially minor character.

You said yourself, she used to be a minor character. Them putting her so much with Darrell since the prison burned down made her a major character.

How did she die? By killing someone she didn't need to kill, who in turn shot her in the head. Meaningless. She didn't die to save someone's life.

She looked like the damsel in distress but she was actually the knight. That's why we loved her.

Killing her is a mistake and it's going to cost some fans - how many remains to be seen.

I know they've lost me.

OMG.

Seriously, people. It is a show about zombies. How do you propose we bring back a dead char....

Oooohhhhh....
Missed the brain maybe? She would be a dead f*ck and others will tell how lousy she was in the sack.

IMO what makes this show the best one to watch is that nobody ( Not even the comic readers) have a clue of what will happen. Beth was a bit of a shocker but look what it brought for ratings.

I'm sorry and I will not to come across as too harsh but if Beth is really the character that kept you watching, you were watching the wrong show. She was never a major character. Even after the Prison she wasn't "major". She just wasn't as minor as she was.

I mean she had 1 full episode with Daryl and a little more bonding then was kidnapped. Wasn't in the final couple S4 episodes or the first 3 of S5. She was in 3 total.

Her death was perfect because she wasn't a crucial part of the story being alive but her death can be a huge part for Daryl, Maggie, Noah and really the entire group.

Seeing as how we are talking about major players here , how many major characters were in the first episode? In the second one?

First episode of the season or first episode of the season?

Rick and Morgan were the only "major" characters in the pilot (and Glenn's voice). As for 5.1, Beth was the only "major" character not in it.

I was only talking about the first two episodes of the series. Of course Beth wouldn't be in those. Rick was the only major character as Morgan hasn't been one but is still alive and due to be back. Glenn was just a voice as you stated in the first episode. The second episode involved many more of the major characters who have still lived and died .

Writers/producers have GOT to respect the opinion of the fans because, without us, there is no show.

Which is exactly why she has to stay dead. Whether or not they should have killed her off and if so should have done it the way they did, doesn't matter anymore. That might have mattered right up until the episode aired and we saw her get killed. Finding a way to bring her back to life would cost them way more fans than her death ever could. That's not how this show works.

I liked her character but I wouldn't say she was a major one, and I'll still watch the show. Pretty much all of the characters I've liked have been killed off (Shane, Merle, Milton, Herschel, Governor, Bob and probably 1 or 2 others I'm forgetting). Even though I think most people knew she was a candidate to die and someone was likely to go in that episode, I do think the way it went down shocked a lot of people. It might have setup a great storyline had they not killed off Dawn immediately after as well. If 1 had killed the other and lived it would have made things interesting for sure. Also if Dawn lived, I'd consider it a lot more likely that the doctor would abandon the hospital and join Rick's crew.

Carl's picture definitely appeared in the 1st episode but I think he might have briefly appeared as well. I'm pretty sure there was a very short scene that showed Dale, Lori, Shane, and possibly Carl.

My nephews just got clearance from their mom to watch this series, so I will be marathoning it over the next few weeks/months with them from the beginning. It should be fun to watch it again with people who have never seen the episodes before.

I cant wait :)

How old are they? Every kid is different, but for me, I probably wouldn't let my kids watch this show until they are at least 14 or so. What do others think regarding when a kid can watch this show? My oldest isn't even 4 yet, so I've got plenty of time to think about this important question. LOL.

The funny thing is they can't even bring her back as a zombie.

The best they can realistically hope for is the occasional flashback.

If they want to get unreasonable I suppose they can hope that Edwards cloned her or that that scene and the rest of this season was all just a dream by someone. :L

Flashbacks are the only way. LOL at all of those other options. I apologize to all Beth fans, but she really wasn't that great of a character. Her death is not a great loss to the show, IMO. We didn't know very much about her and we still don't. Perhaps some flashbacks will flesh out her character a bit more.

How did you miss the fact that Beth died to save Noah's life?

Yeah, seriously, Beth was barely more than a prop until recently.

They just turned 15.

I don't have kids, but my opinion is that she was too protective of them, but as I always told her, it doesn't matter if she was wrong, she is "Mom", so she is right.

Exactly, Beth was a minor character. I also like that her death was due to an accidental firearm discharge, instead of the result of some massively heroic sequence...that brings the story back down to earth with the concept that anybody can go at any time, for any reason, without great meaning. Although in one sense, her death actually was pretty heroic in that she was trying to save Noah.

This is also one of the things I enjoy about Game of Thrones......in the first season of GoT, one of the major characters dies because of wounds suffered during a hunting accident....and another character (a great warrior) died in season one due to an infection of a relatively minor wound.

It helps keep things real. Not every character's death should be some flamboyant exercise in heroics or meaningful sacrifice. Shallow, meaningless deaths on a whim help to keep the audience in a state of surprise & shock (shaking one's head in a WTF just happened moment)........if I recall, the moment Beth died, I believe I said WTF!

I love it!
