No More "Bullpen Failure"
Some updates from Scott Lucas after last night's games.
Cole Winn was effective, but a pitch count of 80 cut his outing short. Winn averaged an outstanding 14.5 pitches per inning before the All-Star break; since then, he's slightly over 18. Chase Lee earned his first professional save despite a solo homer by Brewer Hicklen.
Josh Smith was 1-5 in his AA debut.
Thomas Saggese is on the verge of becoming the first teenaged Rangers with double-digit homers in full-season ball since Nomar Mazara and Travis Demeritte both accomplished the feat in 2014. Those two also had a rookie season that was denied to Saggese by covid. Assuming a typical starting date, Saggese won't turn 20 until after the beginning of the 2022 season.
In two AAA starts, Yerry Rodriguez has faced a higher proportion of lefties than in AA, and they're eating his lunch. Despite a 29% strikeout rate, 12 of 21 opponents have reached safely, and they're batting a cool .700 when they make contact. Maybe he's unlucky, but stripping out all the alleged luck just brings the ERA into the low double digits. Rodriguez has about seven starts in the queue unless he's shut down early. He's 16 innings shy of his previous high of 73 innings.
