Vegas is a second example of a cup winning team with only 1 player drafted by them on the stanley cup winning team.

They dont get excluded They had 7 years to draft and only 1 player drafted was on the winning team.

I mean if you want to grasp at straws, fine. 2 out of 11. Not really the odds I'd gamble on even if we count Vegas. We'll ignore that so far only 4 guys have played meaningful games from the 2023 draft in the entire NHL. 8 from 2022. 18 from 2021. But sure, we can include Vegas like they're a model the Flyers can replicate.

Vegas also picked up (2017 NHL expansion draft - Wikipedia)...

3x 1st rounders
4x 2nd rounders
1x 3rd rounder
1x 4th rounder
1x 5th rounder
1x 6th rounder
Reilly Smith
Nikita Gusev
Shea Theodore
Alex Tuch

As part of their expansion draft trades to select certain players. So if you know how the Flyers can return that type of haul, we can start wheeling and dealing like Vegas did to build a contender. No other team has that kind of ammo to play with (on top of selecting who you want from each roster).

All you have to do is look at the 0 trades Seattle was able to make to see how much of an advantage this proved to be. GMs learned from their mistakes.

There's no other way to build a contender.

Panthers "core":
Barkov - draft
Ekblad - draft
Tkachuk - trade (but by trading a guy you drafted #3 overall after a 115pt season)
Bob - free agent (as recently as a few years ago people talked about his contract as an albatross)

Edmonton:
McDavid - draft
Draisatl - draft
Nugent-Hopkins - draft
Bouchard - draft
Skinner - draft

Dallas:
Robertson - draft
Johnston - draft
Hesikanen - draft
Benn - draft
Oettinger - draft

TB:
Stamkos - draft
Kucherov - draft
Point - draft
Hedman - draft
Vasilevski - draft

Colorado:
Mackinnon - draft
Rantanen - draft
Makar - draft

Boston:
Pastrnak - draft
Marchand - draft
McAvoy - draft
Swayman - draft

Carolina:
Aho - draft
Svechnikov - draft
Pesce - draft
Slavin - draft

Winnipeg:
Scheifele - draft
Ehlers - draft
Connor - draft
Morrisey - draft
Hellyebuck - draft

Toronto:
Matthews - draft
Marner - draft
Nylander - draft
Reilly - draft
So never. Tons of those guys we could have had.

Somehow, we are still reaping the crap from the years of WTF Chuck and that complete idiot, Hextall. I think Briere and Torts are doing their best but that shit those two piled on the Flyers organization was multi layers deep and some of it still needs to be cleaned-out which take more time!!

That list is littered with top 5 picks. Being intent on trying to stay competitive and rebuild makes it that much harder. Picking #12 every year makes it tough to find elite level talent. Of that list, I think only the Bruins don't have a top 5 pick in there. And most have 2-3.

But they got a little lucky and potentially got an elite guy in Michkov at #7 last year.

Funny how they had all those picks and none of them were on the team when they won the cup.

Free agent signing and trades are another way to build a team.

The draft may be the best way but not the only way.

This approach is fine but it rules out a player i would like to see in Philly which is Necas. It also rules out signing Walker which i would also like to see if its a good deal for us.

One thing i would really like to do that i believe this rules out is trading up in the draft to get a top 1 or 2 center in this draft.

From what I've read this guy wont get past the Devils at 10.How can we move up to the 9 slot if he is still available at 9 is the question of the day.

The ultimate question becomes what does it cost us to move up in the draft?

I like this approach.
They should sign some guys that they can then trade.

Pronman has us taking Finnish center Helenius 12th overall in the 2024 draft as of yesterday.

To move up say anywhere from two to four spots, package Konecny, Risto, maybe Sanheim or Farabee, and a pick or picks swap. It is outlined here in this article.

Yeah, the first potential trade he mentions is Konecny to the Devils for the 10th overall pick. Ain't no fucking way that is happening...Lol

If there's still someone we like on the draft board at 14, a trade with the Sharks makes sense, but that's about it. Idk if I would move Konecny though. Only if we're struggling to re-sign him and the return is high.

I would say packaging our late 1st round pick (31st or 32nd overall) with a few other picks (maybe a couple 2nd's and a 4th or 5th) could get us up to 14th again if one of our top centers or defensemen is still available.

Thanks for the article.

I am now thinking Farabee and a 3rd rounder may be enough to move us up in the draft. Getting Farabees 5 million off the books for the next 4 years would be a bonus.
