We need to reverse Clarke it and target Russians in the draft like Ryabkin and Prokhorov.
Pursue Russian free agents and those playing overseas.
We will need to moneyball it with overlooked foreign players and build from that.

Winning attracts the top tier free agents.
That or a boatload a money... which kind of landed us here in the first place.
Excellent post!

At least for just next year Carolina and Winnipeg are two of a dozen teams with more projected cap space than us so if i was a top free agent and had a choice to sign with us or one of those other two teams I'm not signing in Philly.

I agree with the point you made about Marner anyway. This summer isn't really the time to go chasing free agents. Marner is the big fish. Ehlers is a good player, Bennett too. But those guys are going to be on the wrong side of 30 by the time the Flyers can really start to be taken seriously. Overpaying to lure one of those guys to a bottom feeder is probably going to hurt more than it's going to help in the grand scheme.

Save the future cap space. Draft well. Hope the free agency dynamic is shifting and give it time to do so. Go shopping in 2026 or 2027. Maybe a more high end guys are available and you can land a couple of them instead of just one.

Plus '26 is when the Flyers cap situation really starts to open up. +5M for the Laughton/Hayes retentions. Presumably they will have moved Risto's 5M. 1.7M for Atkinson's buyout. That's 12M there. Ellis you can LTIR if you want to spend that 6M.

I'm not worried at all about their cap situation. Couturier is a little over paid, but that won't be a big deal as the cap goes up. Other than that, they're pretty clean right now. They should have plenty of room to add if/when they want to. And I'm not really that worried about guys not wanting to play for the Flyers. 9 times out of 10 they go where they can make the most money anyway.

The concern for me regarding free agency is will anybody worth paying UFA money for actually be available. But hopefully that's changing.

Couldn't have said it better myself :D. I would go shopping later like 2027 so Michkov is just beginning to be an 80-90 point player and can seamlessly fit with another star. Trust the process until then.

Players can make the most money in states that dont have any income tax so we would have to compete with that as well as other teams will have a lot of cap space as well not just us.

Yep. That could be an issue, but not just for us. And those teams will only have so much cap space to throw around.

Word getting out that Rantanen would only go to 4 teams now. Just a coincidence that there are 4 teams in no income tax states? (Dallas, Vegas, Florida, TB)

Rantanen is one of the few players that can be that picky. A lot of players are going to be willing to play for a team that pays 6-8 million a year. Like you said not a lot of teams are going to just have unlimited funds.

The league really needs to find a way to even out this unfair advantage those 4 team have on everyone else.

Lets just say we use the LTIR which we didn't this season and we sign Mitch Marner which is a pipe dream IMO that would put us in third to last place instead of second to last place. If we stay the course and rebuild with young players only we can be back in playoff contention in 4-5 years. Mitch Marner isn't going to make us a playoff team. We would still have zero first and second line centers, no goalie and defense that is mediocre at best. Plus the only way he chooses a rebuilding team to sign with is to way over pay to get him so you would be saddled with another Couts contract in a few years.
Exactly, no reason to try to sign a large contract in FA this year. Don't eat up future cap space for mediocre players and the have to retain 50% salary to dump them.

Tonight should be interesting. Giroux back in Philly and Ottawa needs the W. Also, they played a tight one with Detroit last night, so we should theoretically have the fresher team. Perhaps now we find out whether tank-mode is fully engaged or not.

Nope. We got our asses handed to us by the Senators. Another loss and it looks like tank mode is in full swing.
