Interesting article about offer sheets for next year:

How offer sheets work:

Now, one thing I realized is that you have to offer your own picks and not acquired picks, which is unfortunate.

Current 2025 PHI draft picks:
6 (PHI), 22 (EDM), 26 (COL), 38 (PHI), 41 (ANA), 44 (CLB), 48 (CAL)

So, probably not worth it to sign a player over $4.58M, unless we believe that player will be better than our own 1st round pick this year.
However, probably worth it to take a chance on any player just under $4.58M, because we get that player and only give up a 2nd round pick.
Giving up 38 when we also have 41, isn't a big deal.

"Of course, giving up unprotected draft picks is not easy without knowing if your team is going to be better or not. If it ends up being a top-10 pick next summer..."

This line is the key to me. With the way the Flyers are right now, no way I'd give up the 2026 1st rounder when there's a chance they could win the lottery and draft McKenna. Certainly not for that group of players.

I'm all in for the tank next year. Don't add anything of value this summer, hire a poor sap to coach a sorry team next year, and start turning the corner in 2026-2027. Then you get all 314176 picks they have this summer and hopefully a truly high end 1st rounder from the 2026 draft to start with. Leave Luchanko in juniors. Leave Zavragin in Russia. Let Bonk/Barkey play in the AHL. Shit maybe you do hire Lappy for 1 year just to make sure he doesn't get a chance to "develop" those guys. He can be the sacrificial lamb. Trade Risto.

It's just not time yet to my eyes.

Offer sheeting people this summer obviously makes no sense. Idk about the tank next year, but wtf happened to the tank THIS year? Were the last 9 games of the season THAT valuable for player evaluation entering the offseason? We could've kept Torts for 9 more games, finished 3rd in the draft lottery and THEN fired him. I just don't really understand the logic behind letting him go when we did.

Now we're going to screw off and draft 9th or 10th overall instead of top 3. I just don't get it!! Really, truly, the wins we're getting now over inferior competition are about as meaningless as possible. All we're going to accomplish is potentially getting Michkov the Calder, that's about it. We can often get away with him cheating offensively against these bad teams, but not the rest of the league.

Bingo. Most of the draft stuff out there says there's a big drop after Schaefer, Misa, Hagens, Marone, and Frondell. Flyers playing their way right out of those guys being available.

Team is just depressing these days tbh.

Yeah, it fucking pisses me off beyond belief...Lol I am laughing out loud, but crying deep inside. I can't for the life of me understand what the benefit is in winning these last 9 games. Making the playoffs is a virtual impossibility, but passing Anaheim, Shitsburgh, NYI and even Detroit in the standings is definitely possible.

We were on track to draft 3rd or 4th overall and now we could literally end up drafting 12th overall, perhaps even worse. What in the ACTUAL FUCK!?!? :mad2:

You can maybe add Caleb Desnoyers to your list, but yes, if there's a big drop off after the first 5-6 prospects (as everyone expects), then we just completely fucked ourselves out of a potential All-Star, top of the lineup player!!! And all for what!?! To find out that we can beat the worst teams in the Nhl repeatedly when the games are no longer meaningful!?!

I just cannot fathom it at all.

Posted this on March 14th its been a pattern of this organization so there should be no surprises.
You're not wrong, however, Torts getting fired changed the trajectory of this team. We were absolutely going to pick top 5. You were going to be wrong and then you got lucky (or unlucky), depending on how you look at it.

We were scoring 1.75 goals per game in the last 12 games that Torts coached. Yes, it's a much smaller sample size, but since he's been gone, we are scoring 5 goals per game. The same fucking players.

We can debate how the schedule is lighter now, but during that 12 game stretch, we got destroyed by Chicago and Seattle, two of the worst teams in the league.

As much as I don't want to see anyone tank, that was exactly what we WERE doing until he got fired.

Now, the entire franchise has been jolted and looks like they actually have something to play for, which they really don't...Lol

Perhaps the plan was to tank all along, then Gary Bettman called up Danny B and told him we'd regret it if we finished top 5 in the draft lottery. Sort of like in the movie "42" when the commissioner Happy Chandler calls up Branch Rickey and says he's suspending the Dodgers' manager Leo Durocher for a year.

Another thing. Why
In my opinion, drafting 10th overall now is more likely than 4th. Unless there's a sudden change in tactic, that ship has sailed. Our schedule is easier and now we're actually scoring goals. I do find it incredibly odd that we have no games in 9 of the next 11 days.

This unfortunately is a story book ending and this is the Flyers organization, so....
