Schenn ended up at center and Raffl on the top line, just as I mentioned previously. Now maybe it's time to scratch Streit as I also stated above.

I think Voracek is capable of making sure that top line clicks and the same for Simmonds on the second line. These guys drive the play and can be put anywhere with success.

Giroux shows more jump at even strength with Voracek flanking him because he has to keep up...Lol

Other guys on the lower lines such as PEB, VV and Read continue to play well. Lyubimov was a beast last night, obviously.

Maybe if Weise could make or finish a play, we would have scoring top to bottom with these lines.

That was definitely one of our best offensive efforts, but what the hell is the power play doing at times? The two shorthanded goals we gave up were both completely avoidable and unacceptable. You can possibly blame Stolarz for the first one, but he did settle down and play well, despite his stats not looking too great.

To me, Stolarz could easily be better than Mason with more games under his belt.

I don't totally agree with the last part. I still think Mase is the best goalie in the organization by a pretty good margin. He just needs to be coddled and told he's the #1 and needs the starts like a #1. His stats (2.41 GAA, .914 sv%) since Neuvy got hurt would have him 17th and 18th respectively among goalies with 10 games played. Obviously not great, but certainly better than either goalies stats up to that point.

The sad part is that despite it being his first Nhl game, giving up a soft one early and we mostly played terribly on the power play in front of him, Stolarz still had slightly better numbers in that one game than Mason has on the season. I think with a lot more time in net, he could be the starter and he wouldn't be as fragile either.

It's just a matter of whether that is next season or not.

oh ya, don't get me wrong, i like Stolarz's game quite a bit. i just think Mason is a lot better than people give him credit for. I'd sign Mase to a 2 year deal at 3-4 in a heartbeat. and i'd try to do it now. give him that confidence he needs, as annoying as it is haha. in 2 years the flyers will have a great option between Hart, Stolarz, and Lyon.

just for fun..

2.55 gaa - .911 sv%
1.98 gaa - .923 sv%

one of those stat lines is Carey Price's last two years in the WHL. The other is Carter Hart's last two years in the WHL (so far, 20 games in).

Carter Hart's are the better ones :)

So, Carey Price played on a worse team or was a late bloomer!? Lol

But Mase is making $4.1 million now. Are we still willing to pay him that after being largely outplayed by Neuvy last season, especially in the playoffs...and then the terrible start to this season? Are we sure that he will even take $3-4 million for 2 years and does taking a pay cut shatter his confidence!? Lol It's a damn tough decision, so I am not at all surprised that Hexy has yet to (at least officially, publicly) make it.

Even if Neuvy isn't a cheaper, better option. Maybe we snag Bishop or Bernier in free agency and they probably are better options.

I'd be willing to pay him that. Neuvy is hurt every other month, he's not reliable enough to be a starting goalie. And while I agree Bishop is a better choice, that's probably a longer term, higher money contract. His current contract was 2x6, so you have to expect an increase to at least one of those numbers. With the goalies the Flyers have in the system, why spend so much on a goalie?

And Bernier is not a better option. I'm open to signing a different goalie, but not Bernier. He was a great prospect that developed in to a split time starter at best.

I would spend big money on Bishop short term. Why? He's had proven success in the playoffs and is clearly a far better option than Mason to date. They've both struggled out of the gate this season, but Bishop has a much stronger track record, especially in the postseason.

If this is about winning a Cup, then we want the best options at every position.

If the best goalie in our organization is 17 and 18th in the stats provided that's pretty bad. Mase is a solid goalie but not a goalie that would win us a cup. My feeling is Alex Lyon is going to be the best of the bunch and will take the number one sooner than we think.

I agree Bishop is a good option short term but how much would he take to play for us is the question. If he would agree to a reasonable price that would be ideal as he is way better than Mason. I also don't think Bernier is the answer short term

i just don't think we could get Bishop on an attractive contract. If it's short term it's going to be high dollar and the Flyers won't have that money to improve other areas. If it's a reasonable dollar amount they will have him on the books long term. I'm not opposed to Bishop. I think he's a great goalie. But I think Mase + spending room would get us closer to the cup.

As of now the Flyers have $22 mil in space going in to next year with 9 forwards, 4 dmen, and 0 goalies. Assume Read gets taken in the expansion draft, 8 forwards 4 dmen, 0 goalies.

Should Sign (IMO)
1. Lyubimov - 2 mil
2. Cousins - 2 mil
3. Laughton - 1.2 mil
4. MDZ - 4 mil
5. Ghost - 3.5 mil

11 forwards, 6 dmen, 0 goalies - 9.3 mil left

Then Add (IMO)
1. Stolarz - 1.2 mil
2. Lindblom - .975 mil
3. Morin/Sanheim/Myers - .863 mil

I think i'd be fine with Stolarz as the backup next year. I think Lindblom and one of Sanheim/Morin/Myers make the team next year as well.

12 forwards, 7 dmen, 1 goalie - 6.2 mil left

Raffl-.Giroux-Voracek
Konecny-Couturier-Simmonds
Lindblom-Schenn-Lyubimov
Laughton-Cousins-Weise

Provorov-Gudas
MDZ-Myers
Ghost-Manning
Macdonald

Stolarz

Is about what it would look like. I'd imagine. So the question is, do you sign Bishop at 6ish and scrub 13th forward. Or do you sign Mason for 4 and try to improve in other areas for 2?

That 2 mil could be used to upgrade MDZ (4) and maybe make a run at Shattenkirk for 6? Or you could take the 2 mil and upgrade Cousins (2) and see if you can get Oshie at 4?

Obviously a lot can change, including the final salary cap number and my guesses at new contracts. But I love laying it out and i haven't done it in a while :)

Also think Leier could make the bottom 6 next year too. He's been playing very well for the Phantoms.

The way you laid it out it looks like we have a solid future with a few upgrades. In Hex we trust.

That being said, i personally would do the lines differently.

Oshie-Giroux-Simmonds
Konecny-Schenn-Voracek
Lindblom-Couturier-Raffl
Lyubimov-Cousins-Weise

Provorov-Gudas
MDZ-Myers
Ghost-Manning

Mason
Stolarz

Could be the start of a truly competitive squad.

One thing missing from this line up is grit. The kind that TK shows but we need it from a bigger player. I thought Wiese was going to be that player but he plays a very soft game.

I think with Lindblom, Simmonds, Konecny, and Lyubimov up front and Gudas on the back end there's enough. They're not going to beat the crap out of anyone (except Gudas), but they can all hit. And if it's Morin instead of Myers he'll bring more size/grit as well.

Manning can also hit and will drop the gloves if necessary.
