Pretty embarrassing effort for the home opener, in all honesty. To go 1 for 8 on the power play is just unacceptable. Matt Read was the only player really doing anything on a consistent basis. I thought we played the game at their pace throughout and even when we had an extra man, we often lost the puck battles.

I am willing to blame this on the first game back from a long trip and not being able to ever beat Anaheim, but that win against L.A. is starting to feel like an eternity ago and this now appears to be another slow start to the season.

Ok, so the power play went 1 for 7, but that's still not adequate. We were lucky to even get all of those power plays, but to not capitalize on them essentially lost us the game since we were not able to continue our strong even strength play of previous games.

To go a little deeper on that, how are we letting third and fourth line guys that I've often never even heard of torch us at even strength? Chris Wagner? This guy has four career goals and we let him score on us. Ryan Garbutt? Aside from one decent year in Dallas, this guy scores about 7 or 8 goals per season. That's them beating us on hustle, nothing more.

They are the bigger and perhaps stronger team, but we should be faster and perhaps more elusive. That wasn't the case last night, which sort of leaves me at a loss.

I can't blame any of the three goals against directly on Mase either. We quite simply cannot leave guys wide open in the slot and expect him to make those saves. He may get one here and there, but those chances from prime areas are really difficult to stop.

Its quite obvious that Prov needs more seasoning. He seems lost out there does he go down when Gudas comes back. Ghost not playing much better on the defensive end either

PP was 1 for 7 last night i thought because Schenn wasn't back to his game speed. He looked slow his hands were very shaky and his passing was off.

First game back after road trip usually stinks and they can't beat Anaheim. If there PP does anything they walk in this one too bad.
Hopefully this one is just because it was the first game back we looked bad out there last night.

Supposedly Matt Read really got started early in the offseason and has gone above and beyond in preparation for this season and it shows. Now if we're having slow starts every year, why aren't more of our guys doing the same?

Simmonds and Couturier have looked pretty solid, but a bunch of other guys are not scoring or getting the job done defensively.

Schenn looked pretty invisible last night too. I mean this was your big return to the top line at home and you get zero shots after having 7 full minutes of power play time? You're making over $5 million this season and that's what we get out of you? Unreal. I could understand if he's a little gunshy when it comes to hitting a guy, but not getting open and taking a shot on net.

I am sorry to have to come down hard on these young guys like this, but this "slow start" shit is really getting old. This would be I believe the 5th straight year of a losing record in the first month or two of the season.

I am willing to be patient with rookies on our team or even a guy like Ghost, but veterans like Giroux, Schenn, Voracek, Streit, Schultz, and Weise should be the driving force of this team. The expectations are higher after last season. That's what has come with a taste of success that has arrived earlier than first thought. So, let's work on this and keep improving. Learn from the young mistakes and get better, but the veterans (much like with the Hawks) should be taking the lead here.

The idea of having guys starting early and using Matt Read as an example is 100 percent on the money. He looks like he did three years ago.I think the 1st line is having trouble because the 1st pair defense isnt doing anything and they are trying to recover the misplays for half the shift every shift.

On that note, I am really looking forward to finally playing a damn team from our own conference (and division). Then we can really sort of find out how good of a team we can be moving forward.

Because at the end of the day, if we beat the teams in our division and conference with regularity, these games against the west won't matter much.

I just hope Ive been wrong all along about Prov. He hasn't impressed me at all not even in preseason. After all the hype i heard about him i thought he would be excellent. Nothing about his game stands out to me i hope he makes me eat my words.Hes only 19 and has tons of room and years to improve not many teenagers plying defense in the NHL so patience it is.

There's talk of Streit not having enough in the tank defensively to be paired with Provorov and that he will instead be with Gudas after three more games, so we shall see. It's easy to trash the kid right now, but I think it's the wrong thing to do. He is only 19 years old and how many defenders that young step in and light the league on fire? Even for the elite prospects, they need at least that first year to get adjusted and gain that confidence.

Patience guys D takes time and the word I'm hearing is that he may be the Flyers best Dman after 20 games under his belt. If this wasn't the case I'd send him down after ten but he's that far along just needs seasoning. I can definitely see it just sometimes he does too much and he's not ready for the speed of the game yet. He also does a lot of things right.

Maybe an old Streit is hanging him out to dry a bit. Tough to say at this point. He definitely is having some misfortune.

If I'm getting anywhere near 1 million plus to play hockey, you're damn sure that I'm in shape, and ready to go every game.

Too many guys take it easy for the summer, and try to get back in game shape during training camp, and pre-season.

Our regularity with these slow start comes from too many guys not being commited enough to be at their best early.

I thought he played really well in periods 2 and 3 against the K and well against the Coyotes. He seems a little off since he fell in game 3 which led to a goal. He will be fine.
