I still think DZ and the 18th pick would've brought us back a top five pick this year and would've solved our defense log jam problem. We showed how well we could play without him its not like we missed him when he went down.

I think the emergence of Ghost (and return of Streit) basically made the loss of MDZ look virtually non-existent.

It's easy to forget though that MDZ actually led the team in average ice time by a mile for last season at 23:25 per game. We were relying on him heavily before he went down.

If everyone is healthy, Provorov makes the team and Ghost continues to improve, this defense could really be quite deep.

Ghost had 46 points, 22 of them on the power play, in only 64 games. And he was still a +8 defensively. Unreal stuff for a rookie.

Streit had 52 points (30 of them on the power play) the previous season, but at that time it was statistically better and he played in 81 games.

I agree with the Streit and Ghost coming on made the team look better. I also agree that MDZ had a really really good first half. But if you look at it AMac came in and played just as well and gave us quality minutes that MDZ was giving without skipping a beat. Plus if we made that trade we could have cleared our defensive log jam and drafted a top 5 player.

Idk if it would've been enough. Teams want an arm and a leg for a top five overall pick. They probably would've wanted our 18th, MDZ, a low pick and one of our defensive prospects.

If that's what they would've asked for I would never have done that. We do still have to create space on the back line I hope Hexy has a plan in the works just in case Proverov and Sanheim are NHL ready out of camp.

MDZ is the best all around dman the Flyers have. I would be very hesitant to move him. Basically everyone that's played in the NHL except Ghost (maybe) is movable before him IMO. He played in all situations and excelled in all of them. His production was down but he was as reliable as the Flyers had in their own zone last year. I actually do think the Flyers missed him a great deal down the stretch. They may not have noticed much of a drop off, but think of how potent they would have been with MDZ in the lineup instead of AMac or Schultz?

I think Ghost will take a bit of a step back this year. Everyone has the book on him now, so it will take some time for him to adjust. Hopefully the fan base and management has patience with him. The management I have faith will, but the expectations among the fanbase are sky high so I worry about us.

The log jam on D will sort itself out. Streit and Schultz are tradable if you need to, might not be a super attractive deal, but you can move them no problem IMO. Guys will get hurt too. Plus, Provorov is really the only one with a shot to play significant minutes this year IMO. Morin and Sanheim both still have a lot to prove and I don't think any of the others are ready to outplay anyone on the NHL roster.

We had gotten phenomenal goaltending last year also and I must say its because of Hakstols system and how much better we are defensively. All star team though is a strong prediction.

Agree about Hakstol's system. It just took them time to get used to it.
Pre All-Star Game (47 games) : #27 in goals for, #16 in goals against
Post All-Star Game (35 games) : #9 in goals for, #6 in goals against

That being said, if their advanced analytics remain the same, then an average goalie should produce above average numbers in this system. An above average goalie looks like an all-star.

To me, it's not really a logjam on defense because Hexy is bringing these prospects along slowly and while we don't have room for several of them to make the team this coming season, this next offseason Streit, MDZ and Schultz are all UFA's. There's plenty of space for Provorov, Sanheim and Morin in the fall of 2017.

Also, it's very possible that a couple of our defenders get hurt at some point this coming season and then someone like Sanheim or Morin gets called up for their first taste of the Nhl.

Would be nice to see. Unfortunately, history is littered with teams who turned it around late in the season but weren't able to recapture that magic the next season. Let's hope that it was truly just a matter of taking time to adjust to the system.

Well we have 2 above average goalies so maybe we get two all stars goalies on the squad next season. :suds:

This is true its happened to a few teams just the year before last where they had a low playoff seed looked like they were on the upswing and last season didn't play well enough to make the playoffs. Lets hope Hakstol and Hextall keep us on the upswing.

I like the fact that it's Hexy's choice to bring them along slowly being that we are still competitive while keeping the young D in the minors but I am a firm believer if someone plays well enough to make the team it wont sit well going back to the minors. I definitely don't want to see anyone hurt but I agree it is very possible to have Morin or Sanheim up due to injury.

If a player like AMac can step into your spot and we continue to play the same or in this case better than MDZ is as expendable as anyone else on our D. He was put into my trade scenario because I think we could've received the most back by adding him into any trade.

One, Hextall has really cleaned up the mess that Holmgren left him, cap wise.

Two, there is minor league talent that can help this team.
The whole season will not depend on how Provorov plays, but expectations are high.

Three, they can rotate the goalies and go with whichever goalie is hot at the time.

I think this season comes down to scoring goals.
While that may seem like an obvious pick, it's really about scoring efficiency.
We're missing that sniper, so if we don't get balanced scoring, could be a long season.

Thank you. Looking forward to the Sixers, Flyers, and Eagles.
Speaking of which, is there a forum for questions?
Is there a certian number of posts I have to reach before awaiting moderator approval?
Is it based on length of stay?

Kind of frustrating to post in another thread and see several pages go by before the post gets approved....
