Observation time.

Maybe we are playing less offensive minded teams since A Mac went out, but it looks like the overall team defense is better. It looks like this group is better at supporting each other, especially when there is a break down. For the 1st time, I will give props to MDZ. He has looked more than solid over the last few games. Grossmann has also looked like a legitimate 2nd pairing guy. Schultz is playing better than I could have hoped. I never worried about Streit. Even Schenn seems to be playing more solid lately. Hell, even CC (I actually like this better than Alphabet), in a very small sampling looks good.

The bottom line is that we don't have a legitimate #1 guy. We will not have one this year, so we need to make due. It looks like minutes are more balanced lately. MDZ was high man with 23 and CC low with about 17. We don't have the talent for guys to play 25-27 minutes per night.

A Mac was playing over 21 minutes per game. Since he went out, Schenn, Schultz and especially MDZ are seeing more minutes. The team gave up 28 in the 1st 7 with A Mac and 12 in the last 6 without. Is this all do to A Mac, even I wont go that far, but I think it is a factor. I really think evening out the minutes has helped the whole team.

Anyone notice that Coburn is on LTIR since 10/09/14?

If Coburn were activated and A Mac went on LTIR we would have $6,000,000 cap space. Where is Tonya Harding when you need her?

Looks like Coburn may play Saturday with CC sitting. Option is to give him another game which would be 6 more days off.

I would love to see Coburn play. This is one guy that we're absolutely better with than without, no matter how well the replacements are playing. He can play 22+ minutes easily, which would rank him 2nd among our defensemen, right behind Streit.

When MacDonald returns, there's going to be an extremely difficult decision to make as to whom he replaces. Statistically, it should be Schenn, but if only based on salary alone, it will be Schultz (even though he has played much better).

Regardless, these are fabulous problems to have. With as well as our 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th etc. defensemen have played as of late, there is no shortage of directions to go with this team for Berube and Hextall.

A Mac is scheduled to skate on Tuesday. Most people know of my criticism of him. He is a 3rd pairing guy making top pairing money and playing top pairing money. My HOPE, is that the minutes will still be spread around when he gets back. No more 23 minutes per game. He needs to be back down to 18-19 minutes with the minutes spread out to the other 5. Its working without him in the line up.

Thought this was an interesting quote:

"I know many out there argue he is a product of playing with Claude Giroux, but to be honest, over the past year or so Giroux has more often been a product of playing with Voracek. Voracek has been the most consistent Flyers for several stretches."

I think this season, Jake is finally showing his consistency, but I think even last year, Jake had a bit of inconsistency - I think they both need each other and that's what makes them both really good

Last season, G still had 20+ more points than Jake so it's hard to say that G needs Jake more than Jake needs G, but I think Jake has really taken his game to another level this season and part of it is his conditioning

Some of the points disparity comes on the PP though, which is obviously run through Giroux. Voracek benefits being on the back side obviously, but most of the PP stays on G's side with the double screen or the down low play to Simmonds. I don't know if there are numbers out there that would show this, but I would agree with the statement that 'Voracek carries Giroux 5 on 5'.

Especially this season. Voracek is a force to be reckoned with right now. I haven't seen a Flyer look so dominant on the puck in a very long time.

Two totally different players except that the both seem to be pass 1st guys. I don't think either carries the other but they have that special chemistry that compliments each other.

Jake is becoming very strong on the puck, is lightning, a great passer with a great shot. He is starting to dominate by going through the neutral zone with sped and then making strong moves to get a shot off. When he wants to dominate, he can. Moves best with the puck

G is more shifty and finds the open spot to get his shot off (especially on PP). A great passer with incredibly accurate shot. Never gives up and isn't afraid to take the body. Equally good with and without the puck.

Having a week off with all of the injuries is a good thing. Then again we have won 3 straight and are on a role.

Good teams deal with the schedule no matter what - the break comes at a good time - considering how they played late in the Colorado game, the practice time will help them refocus and understand that they can be better

Crappy night with the Rags Devs and Isles winning but at least the Pens lost.
