I wouldn't mind Vinny going back to center the 4th line. When he was in that spot last year our 4th line had picked up its offense immensely. I would like to see Schenn and AMac play together again.

I think Schultz should be playing when Coburn comes back. With the guys we have, you need 1 mobile guy with 1 slow guy. I consider the mobile guys to be Streit, A Mac and MDZ. I still believe Coburn is a good skater but I don't think he really falls into mobile or slow. The slow are Grossmann and Schenn.

I think our top pair could be Streit - Coburn with the 3rd pair Schenn - A Mac. Does Schultz have enough speed to play 2nd pair with Grossmann? If not I think A Mac should be with Grossmann and Schultz with Schenn. When Coburn is back, I bet Schultz sits and MDZ plays with Schenn.

Not sure what these stats mean other than maybe A Mac stinks. Interesting stat of teams save % while on ice. L. Schenn is listed around 77%. This tells me more quality shots while he is on the ice. Schultz and MDZ also pulling the average down.

you can look at it from so many angles though..

are the quality of shots higher? are the goalies playing worse? are the flyers just getting flat out unlikely when they're on the ice? how many shots have we seen bounce of players or sticks and in to the net?

there's so much more to it than a 77% sv percentage while X is on the ice. that's what kinda gets me with some of the advanced stats.

You definitely have to look at the stats together. Corsi QoC shows that average quality of competition that each player has faced. While MacDonald has the lowest Corsi Relative number, which takes into account shots for and against and goals for and against, he has also faced the toughest competition of the Flyers d-men. Other key stats are to the far right, Offensive Zone Start and Finish %'s. Ideally, you want to see players have a higher finish % than start %, which signifies puck control.

This says to me that L Schenn gets blamed for more than he is responsible for.

yep, definitely need to look at it all together, and preferably with a nice big sample size to try to level out stuff like 'puck luck' and wonky zone start/finish situations.

A-Mac has never had great corsi numbers but it's hard for me to believe that he sucks - when I watch him play, he's usually pretty solid imo

lol @ the pens. blowing a 3-1 lead with 3 minutes left to two Detroit goals with the goalie pulled. then losing in OT. (sorry doob)

also, off the hockey topic, wow does VT suck at football. :(

Agreed - but not $5 mil/yr solid....

Thank you. At $5 mill/yr you should be more than solid. At best he is a 3rd pairing player on a team with decent dmen. Its not his fault that Homer over paid for only 6 more years, but he is average at best.

I just watched the high lights. I only hope that doesn't carry over for the Wings to this weekend.

My opinion on A Mac is not from numbers but from what I see. I don't think he sucks, I think he stinks. Maybe a little harsh, but when I look at Cap numbers and the number of defense prospects, I see a major problem with his abilities and his cap hit. I found this review:

By now, if you're reading this site you probably are pretty familiar with my (and most of the staff's) opinion on Andrew MacDonald. He is an above average skater with above average puck skills, who at first glance seems to be strong in his own zone. However, his struggles in the neutral zone result in him almost always spending time in his own end and therefore sporting some atrocious possession numbers.

Time and time again the other teams goals are because of horrendous turn overs or because of puck control in our defensive zone. Every game we have such break downs that we either take a hooking or holding penalty or give up a goal as the zone becomes a shooting gallery. A Mac makes too many players look like Jagr with the puck. He is our 2nd highest paid defenseman and I expect more than what I am seeing.

@NicholsOnHockey: Friedman: I've heard that the reason #Flyers signed Weber to offer sheet was they thought #NYR was going to trade for him. #Preds

What a badass offer sheet

A guy who I think the Flyers should pursue is Steven Oleksy - he's a right-handed shot and with the Caps defense as it currently stands, he's in the minors and doesn't have a spot on the NHL team - he's a solid third pairing d-man, tough as nails, good shot and a solid teammate - he's also cheap and the Flyers should make a trade for him - he'd definitely be in the top six on this defense and can help them right now

We have too many 3rd pairing guys as is. He is 28. Every thing I am reading is that Hexy is trying to get Whitney to come back for the KHL on a 2 way contract.

Ryan Whitney is washed up - he's nothing but a 3rd pairing guy and maybe even worse - if he was a decent guy he wouldn't be coming to teams on PTO's

I'd rather them make a move for a plug (whitney) than a more solid 3rd pair guy that costs pieces, even if they are low draft picks.

Signing Whitney to fill in for a month doesn't hurt you at all long term. When the guys heal you can bury him.
