It nice that we finally have some prospects to look forward to. Since 2011 we starting drafting players that you can actually look forward to seeing. Couts, Laughton, Leier, Ghost, Moran, Hagg, Sanheim and Stolarz are to name a few. Because of some of the veterans under contract, and a high cap hit, there currently isn't room for these guys. Moran looked good in camp and should have had at least 9 games this year. Problems was that we had too many One way contacts ahead of him. Ghost was one of the best dmen in pre-season but there was no way to keep him up. A good friend, who knows a hell of a lot more about hockey than me comments that if you put them all in blank sweaters and did not know who each guy was, you would have picked Ghost as a top 6 guy. I hate to think that this will happen again next year because Grossmann, A Mac and L. Schenn are making so much money that you have to keep them. This is a problem. I don't want to see any of these guys or B. Schenn moved for another average over priced guy. We have a decent young core but too many average players making too much money. The average over paid guys are blocking the way for the young bucks. Our top ranked rookie this year is Akeson. This doesn't seem possible. Personally, I think he has talent but he is a currently 4th line player that doesn't fit in the 4th line and is now in the dog house. I am all for moving dead weight to open spots for the young guys. The bonus is creating cap space. With a core of G, Jake, Simmonds, B.Schenn, Read, Couts, with veterans, Vinny, Umberger and Frenchie, we should have a better than mediocre team with even a mediocre defense. I have been a Flyers fan for 42 years and for the 1st time in a long time am looking forward to seeing some of the younger guys step up. Its killing me that this isn't even an option. I can live with mediocre if there are some young guys that I can look forward to. The quick fix has left us in this situation and Hexy will have to be patient with this fan base that wants instant gratification.

So like me,this conversation has been ongoing for years for you too.

Good afternoon boys. Let's get a winning streak going. Tough game tonight on the road, but I still believe we can get a win. Btw, very surprised this game is not listed on the bookie for vcash?

Ha, I don't have quite the servitude that you guys have accrued. Old farts :D.

It's definitely not a good situation on defense. Coburn and Macdonald are what they are (useful 2nd pairing guys at best), but I am still hopeful that Schenn could improve. He's still only 24. He's got a lot of games under his belt, but a lot of them have been on bad teams in the wrong role. Which is why I don't want to do that to the young guys we have now. You have to cultivate these guys and give them what they can handle, no more. Schenn has essentially been asked to play a top 4 role most of his career and it's stunted his growth because of it. That's why I'm ok with leaving Grossmann and Schenn in there. Feed them to the dogs on this defense. I'd much rather them endure it than Ghost or Morin.

Next year or the year after, if Schenn or Grossmann are in the way, then I could see it being a problem. That's why I'd be ok moving one of them at the deadline when their value is at it's highest. But for this season, I don't see it as a problem. It's protecting the younger guys from getting shellacked over and over and ruining their confidence. Ghost in for Schenn or Morin in for Grossmann, this season, does not change the fact that this defense sucks.

I'm so fed up with people saying Steve Mason isn't a good goaltender - people on twitter have no sense - I don't get why people don't think he's good

People think he isn't good because they only look at GAA. Right now he has a 3.78 GAA. A brick wall, with our defense, would probably have a 3.20 GAA. Save % does not tell the story either as too many of the goals scored are high % shots.

heh, I've become a pretty serious hockey snob these days. I read stuff like that and instantly blow them off as uneducated fans and giggle at their intellectual shortcomings.

I do all my hockey talking here and on the NHL general board Where the smart fans are! :suds:.

And Meltzer's blog is pretty much the only one I read. And then I read his comments because some of the guys there seem pretty intelligent too (and pretty funny). I don't post there though.

Well, it's tough become a knowledgeable fan these days if you're watching whatever the hell it is the Flyers are doing on the ice and trying to learn about hockey. :L

It's going to be a long season for sure. I'm curious to see which Flyers team shows up tonight in the Burgh?

It is tough to watch sometimes but you gotta remember we are playing the best teams in hockey all in a row. Guys really need to start moving their feet and stop gliding around all three zones.

It would be nice to see them rebound after last night embarrassment. Thank god Mason played well of that could've been 8-0

Kind of feel bad for Mase. He's better than what his numbers indicate. Reminds me of Pavelec of the Jets. He doesn't have the support in front of him. The Flyers have a lousy defense who can't clear a friggin puck out the zone.

We have lousy team defense not just the defense. The announcers last night pointed out several times that all three forwards were in the attacking zone as the Blackhawks were entering our zone.

We are saving it for tonight. We beat the Pens tonight.
