Not really all that interested in Sekera to be honest. He'd probably help but I'd rather not give up stuff (prospects or draft picks) for a rental given the Flyers current situation.

Plus I don't really think he's that good.

He did have a really good season on a Canes team that isn't very good - I don't know if that's a good thing or not but like I said they need to look at everything possible when it comes to defensemen

I think if they can't improve the defense then they need to call up Scott Laughton, because his defensive abilities could help the team - team defense is important and the forwards are just as important, I think he could help defensively

EDIT: We talked about Jeff Petry earlier too, I'd like them to go after him - he's a right handed shot I think and that could help too - the Oilers undervalue him for whatever reason

He did have a pretty good season with the Canes and I guess I wouldn't be opposed to adding him, I just don't wanna give up very much to get him. He's a pretty offensive minded guy so I don't know how much he'd actually help the defense actually play defense.

Really though, the point I'm trying to make, and what I think the Flyers should be focused on, is not selling future pieces (ie draft picks) for stuff that helps in the short term. That's what got them in this mess and it's not what's going to get them out. Barring a trade that makes them significantly better this season (which I don't think Sekera does), or a trade that brings in a bright prospect for the future, I'd rather see them stand pat and use whatever pieces they would've traded moving forward.

And I don't even know what to think about Oilers players these days. On the one hand, he's logging 4-5 dman minutes on an Oilers team that's giving up 5.75 goals per game. On the other, I don't think anyone in the Oilers organization has any idea what the hell they're doing so Petry might actually be better than the guys playing 1-2-3 out there.

Even still, at this point, I just wouldn't touch Oilers players. They're such a mess it's hard to get a read on who is actually decent at hockey on their team. And i'll admit, I don't watch them enough to know either.

I think he is better than the guys that are out there - the Oilers systems are awful too which makes certain guys look worse - I know Detroit would love to have him because he's a righty

I still think the best move is to try to get rid of some of the 4-6 dmen with $3+ cap hits for picks etc. This probably wont happen until the deadline when teams are looking for some depth. We would open cap and a spot for a young guy. I am not giving up on the season but also don't expect any real player movement until then.

If we started winning games at the pace we did in the 2nd half last season we would be fine. Its 4 games in lets give it a few weeks to determine if we make any moves.

I am looking both short and long term. We have too many players that are getting significantly more than there value. Everyone wants to trade for that stud dman we don't have. It is not going to happen. These are the cards we have. The only helpful moves we can make are far down the road. We have an abundance of what other teams will want come playoff time. Most deadline moves involve depth players. We have anywhere from 3-4 depth dmen that can be replaced from within. Look at other teams cap hits for there bottom 1/2 dmen. Its not $3.5 - $5 million. Our 3rd pairing is a 2nd paring cap hit. Only Schultz and MDZ bring it down a little. Homer really screwed this team long term.

I agree with all of this if we don't turn it around. I am hoping we can play a lot better the next few weeks and everyone ( forwards and D) build a chemistry and we get a 4-8 seed and do some damage in the playoffs.

Concerning Facts of the Day

Not only did our remaining six opponents in October all make the playoffs last season, they have combined to win six of the last seven Stanley Cups. None of them have a losing record so far this season. In fact, they are a stellar 12-5-5 altogether.

Buckle up your seat belts, gentlemen. This could be a bumpy ride until we reach November. There's no doubt that it's a serious challenge to our boys and I hope we're up for it.

That said, if we can't give it all we got at Chicago, Pittsburgh or home against the defending champs, then we'll never see what this team can do. So, I expect a response somewhere in there.

I see only Pittsburgh as a win. I don't see us winning in Chicago even though Calgary just did a couple nights ago. Damn Hiller would have been nice.

Keep the faith a lot of us were calling for blood after last years start but we turned it around hopefully we can win one tomorrow and go from there. :yahoo:

As strong as these opponents in late October are, our early November opponents are equally weak. So, I guess if we were to somehow start 1-7-2, we could definitely dig out of it, much like we did last November. It's absolutely unreal to see this shit all over again though. I know the circumstances are different, but the win/loss results are not.

I really like to think that we will beat Dallas, Pittsburgh and Detroit. I have plenty of faith remaining, even if we don't win half of these remaining October games. We're still competitive in every single game and eventually we're going to steal a couple shootouts if not due to dumb luck only. Just try harder to win the damn games in regulation or OT meanwhile.

I would also approach the shootout differently. Have more fucking fun with it for God's sake. I think the shootout requires more finesse and creativity. These are things that we are clearly lacking. It's not going to hurt us in regulation or OT (and especially not in the playoffs), but aside from Giroux, it's killing us in the shootouts.

At this stage, I don't even give a shit if we lose every shootout. At least have fun and be creative. Don't be afraid to fail or feel like we've already lost before it's even started. To me, it's a tie anyway, win or lose.

Yep they need to score the first goal, build off of it and have plenty of offensive zone time - they can win these games, they've been in every game, just need to finish it off

I'd like to see guys like Matt Read and Sean Couturier in the shootout - I think they would surprise some people

Well, as much as I'd like to agree with you, both of them had their shots against Price and Andersen with zero results.

It's just mind-boggling to me how on a team loaded full of skilled forwards that we only have ONE of them who we are even remotely confident in to score a clutch goal for us. G is money in virtually every facet of the game and this is why he got paid. He's going to earn every penny too.

I'll probably get tackled for saying this, but some kid named James van Riemsdyk scored 6 goals on only 10 attempts in shootouts just last season. If we gave any shits at all about them, we'd have never traded him away for a guy that we want to get rid of now.

Regardless, I would still continue to rotate in guys like Read, Couturier, B. Schenn, Raffl and Akeson as the second and third shooters until we start to get a feel for who we should ride.

I have many things to say on the JVR matter but I will refrain except for saying JVR watched the playoffs from home while Schenn was our best playoff defenseman.
