honestly a 60 minute effort wins the Habs game. a couple bounces in the flyers favor wins the devils game. and losing to the bruins 2-1 in the last minute is hardly a 'bad' loss.

just gotta bring it for 60 minutes Tuesday and they should have an opportunity to win the game. a .500 month of October would be looked at in hindsight as a good month I think. They've got a very difficult schedule.

Over paying with youngins for someone who isn't a top dman but is advertised to be one would be old school Flyers. Hexy will take some lumps and continue to build from within until the Pups are ready. I can see Umberger, L. Schenn or Grossmann going at the trade deadline. Someone would want a veteran for the playoffs and Schenn and Grossmann would be good 3rd paining on defense. Opens cap and roster spots. Problem is that we have 2 1st-2nd pairing guys in Couburn and Streit and 4 3rd pairing guys in the balance.

I agree with this 100%. Boston and Montreal are supposed to be two of the best teams in the east and we lost in the last minute on the road and got a point vs Montreal so its not the worst thing in the world. Its a tough start but we may be able to do what we did last season and come back and make the playoffs

The Boston game was close and decided on a crazy play that evens out during the season.

The Habs game is more troubling. Yes they got a point but collapsed in the 3rd. You cant give up a 3 goal lead in the 3rd PERIOD! This isn't a young team and they should be able to play with a lead. This team has forward talent but too many 5-6 dmen to catch lightning. I hope to be proved wrong but we have too any 12 minute a night dmen playing 18 minutes. Not a good recipe for success.

I get great pains when I look back a few years to see a blue line of:

Pronger, Timonen, Carle, Coburn, Meszaro, Grossmann and Gustafsson.

Now:

Coburn, Streit, MacDonald, Grossmann, L. Schenn, MDZ and Schultz.

2 #1 parings and a #3 has become and #2 and 2 #3's. Unless someone desperately needs a slow, stay at home 3rd pairing guy. We are Fucked. Coburn - 1yr., Streit 2 years (really not too bad), MacD 5 years :omg:(OUCH), MDZ -RFA, L. Schenn 1 yr., Grossmann 1 yr. and Schultz UFA.

What a mess. Thanks Homer!

I actually don't think it's that bad of a situation. Streit, MacDonald, and Coburn are all good pieces to have in an NHL caliber D. Supplement them with Ghost, Morin, and maybe Hagg (or a FA or trade) and you have a decent D corps. Schenn, Grossmann, and MDZ will all be up by 2016 which frees up room for the young guys.

The key is, one of Ghost, Morin, or Hagg need to develop in to a top pair d-man (in a further projection, Sanheim). That may be a stretch, but that's 4 quality chances at a top pair dman. I'm perfectly fine with Streit/Macdonald as the second pair. And I'm ok with Coburn on the 1st pair, as long as he's got a bonafide #1 pair guy with him. Then you have the other 2/3 prospects as the 3rd pair. That's a fine NHL D IMO.

Pair that with the way the Flyers offense and goaltending has been the past 18 months or so, and you've got a recipe for a winning team. Not to mention, with all those ELC's in the fold, plus some downright steals up front (Simmonds, Read), you likely have money to work with.

He only gave the 4th line 8 minutes in the Montreal game which was very low considering your top three were obviously tired and getting out played for long stretches at a time.

Yep Mark Streit, A-Mac and Braydon Coburn are a solid threesome, but they need the younger guys to complement them at some point

It's the Luke Schenn's, Nicklas Grossmann's and even MDZ's of the world who are holding them back

Offense and goaltending have been strong for the last 1 1/2 years as you mentioned, so they just need the defense to get going

Yep. The bold is where the improvement needs to come from. And to be honest, even 2/3 of those guys playing on the 3rd pair I think could be fine if your top 4 is solid. They just get exposed playing as the 3-4-5 in your defense.

I'm still very curious to watch MDZ this year. He's been a bit of a spark plug on offense and I think he's exciting to watch.

I think they need to go back to Luke Schenn with A-Mac - Luke was at his best with A-Mac - I think they need to put MDZ with Mark Streit so that MDZ has a veteran to look up to that is stable and plays the game the right way - and then roll the dice with a third pairing of Nicklas Grossmann and Nick Schultz and hope that they don't get destroyed when they're on the ice - and when Braydon Coburn comes back, put him with Nicklas Grossmann because Braydon Coburn has a lot more speed and can help in that regard

I agree with MDZ - that's why I want him with Mark Streit, it could really boost him

I dno if I like MDZ with Streit. They'd be a nightmare defensively I think. I do like Coburn/Grossmann though. I thought that was a nice pairing the one season when they were used in a shutdown role.

I would also like to see MDZ with Coburn. I think that would be a very fast pair and I think Coburn could cover up for MDZ's propensity to get caught up the ice because he has the wheels to cover.

I like AMac and Streit as a pair too, but based on these two comments that would put Schenn with Grossmann and that would be a disaster haha.

My problem with A Mac is that he is getting $5.0 million for 5 more years. McDonagh gets $4.7 for 4 more and Hjalmarsson gets $4.1 for 4 more. A Mac is worth between $3.5-4 m. Not $5. I don't blame him as he was able to cash in but it's a killer. Schenn and Grossmann for 1 more year at $3.6 and $3.5 are also killers. Bottom 3 should be $2m and under. These guys play like bottom 3 and are getting 3-4 money.

Actually, I think Mark Streit is better defensively than people give him credit for - he's a smart player and I think he's the type of guy that MDZ should really look at as far as getting the most out of his potential - to me, Braydon Coburn isn't smart enough to have him with MDZ - I don't want a dumb guy turning MDZ into someone dumb too

I think the key is spreading out the d-pairings - yeah A-Mac and Mark Streit is a nice pair but I think if you can make the other two pairings somewhat better by splitting them up, then that might need to happen in order to have success

ya I would at least be ok trying Streit/MDZ. At this point I'd be ok with trying anything haha, cant be worse than what we're seeing.

I like A-Mac with Luke Schenn because of A-Mac blocking shots - I think Mark Streit and MDZ together is good because you can push the pace and that's what the Flyers need to do - I think when you get a lead, you need to be able to continue pushing and I think Mark Streit and MDZ are good for that - it also puts MDZ with better players and that helps his confidence

AMac and Schenn could be a good defensive pair. Throw them out there against other teams top lines and I think you could shut them down fairly well. Takes a lot of the defensive pressure off Schenn too. I like that pair idea.

And MDZ/Streit would certainly push the pace. No question about that one. Would be some exciting hockey one way or the other.

My Pro sports teams are off to Shitty starts. Injuries are never an excuse but the Rams lose Bradford, Chris Long and T. Johnson while the Flyers are down Kimmo and now Vinny. I don't care what you say but those hurt.

In good new, my College Hockey team is up to #4 in one poll and #6 in the other. They split on the road with #6/7. Of course the 2nd leading scorer from last year missed the weekend with an injury.

Final thought: I will never be considered a Bandwagon Fan!:yahoo:
