It would've been nice to play that first round series with Mason starting game 1. Well its a new season LETS GO FLYERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
one vote for a Saturday Picks League.. any other takers?
I'd obviously play.. either way..
Let's be honest about this team. Right now they are middle of the pack at best. They have solid forward depth, with a young core. The D is well below average and, other than perhaps Coburn and Schenn, the rest will be gone by the time the young prospects take over. We are still a few years away from that happening. BUT, I do believe they are on the right track. Not sure Mason is the answer in goal, and I expressed that concern in the offseason. We'll see. My expectations are low this season and next, but I'm ok with that. The future looks bright.
You are correct about the defense. At this point Grossman doesn't even belong on the ice. I do however believe that if we had a better core of defenseman that would definitely make Mason look better than he did last night and he would be good enough for a deep playoff run.
I thought Grossmann hasn't looked too bad yet. Game 1 he looked a little slimmer and faster. Looked good on PK. Didn't notice too much last night. Time to see if the kids can play.

The bold is exactly what you want from a defensive dman like Grossmann IMO. The only time I really noticed him last night was on the Jagr penalty. And let's be honest, Jagr has been doing that to NHL dmen for 20 years, it's ok to happen every now and then.
I really hope we're able to trade for a top pairing defenseman at some point this season or it could be a long, long year defensively. We can't realistically expect guys like Ghost, Morin or anyone else we have to step right in and shore up the defense.
I would trade Read, a prospect and picks if that's enough. We have more than enough depth offensively to shoulder losing a forward.
It's just really concerning when we're scoring enough goals to win, getting solid goaltending and STILL not able to win a game. Emery was unreal last night and then we spent the final 12 minutes or so of the third period in our own end, scrambling to get the puck back. I thought the lack of physicality was a major issue at that stage. If the smaller, quicker Canadiens are free to skate all over our defensive zone without fear of being mashed to the boards, they are going to dominate us.
