Magnificient 7

A few really minor quibbles (the Cherokee recruitment scene), but if you want to watch 90 minutes of good solid action, go see it.

8 out of 10

I just saw The Magnificent 7 yesterday and it was ok. Lots of shoot em up action, but the story itself wasn't great. There's no doubt in my mind that both the original and the remake were both better than this one.

The acting was pretty good across the board. The female lead was excellent, and Washington was his usual self. I think Faraday's character could've had a whole movie built around him--Pratt was good. The action scenes are top notch and fast paced.

On the bad side, this M7 got really slow in the middle--it would've been a better movie if it was only 1.5 hours long instead of 2hrs+. I agree that the indian recruitment didn't make a lot of sense and I didn't really see why Faraday, the indian, or the tracker joined and stayed with the group.

I'd give it a 5.5. I doubt I'll ever rewatch it...it sucks b/c I'm a fan of westerns.

The story is the exact same as the story in Kurasawa's and the remake (Magnificent). Bad guys take town. Band of heroes save town. That's the story.

Watching Dead Poets Society.....I've seen it easily 50-60 times and can watch it over and over. Just like Shawshank, Green Mile, and a few other movies.
That's how I am with Big Jake and the final scene of Scent of a Woman and Unforgiven. Watch 'em every time they come on.

Yep, and imo, the first two did it better than this one did.

I wouldn't disagree. Samurai is an alltime classic, and the remake was done in the spirit of the original. Homage more than ripoff.

That doesn't make this latest remake a 5 out of ten movie though.

Except no Steve McQueen, James Coburn, No Charles Bronson. No Yul Brenner. No RRRRobert VVVaughn with the shakes.

This new movie has a pretty good cast. Is it to that level? No it isn't. But let's not pretend like they didn't cast anybody in the movie.

And I'll take Denzel over Yul Brenner every day.
