The kid does have a sweet pair of mitts, I guess he didn't interview all that well which is the reason he dropped to #24 where the Canucks nabbed him (Flames could have taken him at #22, but they selected Emile Poirier instead of Hunter). It will be interesting to compare these two guys in a few years to see if the Flames made the right decision.

I wonder if that is becoming a strategy. A kid is pretty talented and knows it, but doesn't want to wind up in a wasteland so he tanks the interview and hopes to slide. Some good players have slid recently; Hunter, Seth Jones, and Josh Ho-Sang. I am sure there are more examples I can't immediately think of.

Although Ho-Sang might not have thought that through. He still wound up on the Island.

Nah. Seth Jones passed up South Beach for Nashville? Or Denver, where he learned to play hockey? Or Tampa, where his parents will eventually retire to?

Ho Sang I don't get. But Garth Snow does, so everything will be okay forever.

The NFL or NBA (or both) do that for all rookies. Not sure why the NHL wouldn't, seeing as how every NBA/NFL'er has been to University at least while most NHLers stop learning at 15.

Wait, so does that mean you think that attending school/university means that they're learning?

Isles prospects game is tonight. All tickets are like 5 Bucks with the money going to charity as always. Sorokin the Russian goalie stayed home. With a 3 year deal in the KHL who knows if he'll ever come over here. From what I've read on the Isles fansite Ho-Sang's skating ability is special. The game will be interesting. Reinhart is their as is Pulock. The Isles future on D could look something like this:

Reinhart Pulock
Hamonic De Haan
Pelech Pokka
Mayfield

We're talking serious depth here.:D:

Just got back from the 3 on 3 game at the Ice Haus. Jackets have a pretty decent future. I have some pics and videos that I will get up later. Just a few quick notes:

Have you had a chance to notice Olivier Leblanc at all yet? If so, how is he looking? He's a long shot to ever make the NHL but I'm curious how he might look among the other young prospects.

He didn't look out of place, julian. I think he showed pretty good vision and made some nice plays (especially when out with Bjorkstrand and Wennberg), but I just don't think he has the foot speed, especially for a defenseman. At one point he tried to turn and bump Milano off the puck. By the time he got set, Sonny was two strides ahead.

Wennberg - Was everything they are saying. Head and shoulders above everyone but Rychel and Dano. Looked to be having a great time too. Looks about twice the size he was last year. I think he got like 5 goals and didn't miss once in the shootout. I'd wager he makes the team next year.

Rychel - Holy crap. Huge, strong, fast and with a crazy hard shot. I think he might have been the best on the ice. Looked 5x better than last year. I could see him playing alongside Dubinski and Atkinson this year.

Milano - Yeah, he's more than youtube puck skills videos, alright. Super speed, reads plays well (picked off a ton of passes) and yes, quite the stickhandler. He was a little small comparitively, but he was also the youngest one there. I will watch him light it up at BC.

Ryan Collins is gigantic. Moves pretty well too. When he fills out, he is going to very effective.

I was standing ner Dave Maetzold (pre-game host) and he was telling a guy with him that Rimer hopes TJ Tynan doesn't make the team because he is afraid of calling him TJ Tiny on air. Seriously the guy is like 5'2". The Falcons page lists him as 5'8". Must have measured him on his skates. While he was standing on the bench.

Ryo Hashimoto - Well, it's a nice story at least.

Forsberg / Dansk - They look dead even. But for my money, Korpisalo had a better day today. Neat note - the team did a service visit to the Ronald McDonald house. They apparently colored in their goalie jerseys with some kids, so that's what they were wearing today. Nice touch.

Goalie Elvis is completely insane. Chasing puck out to the blue line, trying to tackle opponents behind the net.

Apparently, they recorded it and Rimer and Davidge called it. Will have to see if Rimer called him TJ Tiny. Me and the boy started off in the corner at the left end of the ice (right above the Huntington Sign) and then moved behind the net along the wall (not the windows) from the second scrimmage on. I am in a red shirt.

Not sure if this is twatwaffle trying to stir something up or if Sonny has genuine reservations. I understand being excited, but he needs to go to BC and develop. Come back next year or the year after and we'll see.

Wait, so does that mean you think that attending school/university means that they're learning?

I think an argument can be made that there is a somewhat higher intellect amongst leagues where post-secondary education is mandated by the league as opposed to the NHL where kids basically stop learning at 15.

A single thread to discuss the happenings in the dev camps going on for a bunch of teams this week.

For the Jackets, I haven't been personally but a friend of mine is there and said that Alexander Wennberg is tearing it up. Compared him to Ryan Johansen from last year. Good news for the Jackets.

And sorry Dash, but Frederic St Denis is a little beyond "dev" camp guy. He's on his first FA contract now! :thumb:

Yeah I'm really excited for Wennberg. Seems like this is the first time where we actually are going to have a lot of prospects that will produce at the NHL level. The days of Nikolai Zherdev and Nikita Filatov still give me nightmares :L

The future does look pretty bright. Wennberg was amazing, and Rychel looks like he can step right in as well. Plus Bjorkstrand, Dano, Zaar and Heatherington are all close.

And that's not even mentioning guys like Erixon, Anderson and Goloubef who weren't at this camp.

I just wish I felt a little more secure about goalie. Again, if Bob gets hurt we are screwed.

"Learning" isn't something that only happens in a classroom though. And are you really suggesting that the intellect of the average NBA or NFL player is greater than that of the average NHL player? I know it isn't everything, but I'm sure you've listened to NFL and NBA players being interviewed. Do many of them sound like they picked up a ton of knowledge while in college?

I assume most athletes are braindead, but there's a special kind of braindead for the hockey folk.
