So now that we've hit the opening window for buyouts, is there a time when it closes again?

say Heatley gets cleared to play at the beginning of the season. Can Minny buy him out then or will they have to wait til the end of the finals again and hope he's healthy. Which he wont be.

I think they'd have to wait until next years window.

And follow on question - does a compliance buyout have to have been on payroll at time of lockouot.

Example - I sign Briere. He sits in a corner and whimpers and rubs his Canadiens tattoo and contributes NOTHING. Can I use a compliance buyout on him NEXT year?

Good question. Logic tells ME that the player would have to have been signed under the previous CBA to qualify for the compliance buyout.

This is Gary Bettman's NHL though, and logic rarely applies, so there has to be some loophole somewhere.

everyone knows that trading Vinny was the reason for making room for Luongo for Malone and a 2nd round pick and then Malone getting bought out :D its that obvious to everyone right

That correct KB. They are for contracts from the last CBA

Anyone think that the Vinny buyout really hurts the Bolts financially in the long run? They aren't the Leafs playing with monopoly money...

i think not buying him out probably would hurt them more. They are however playing with Revenue Sharing money no?

Ugh. I understand from a team/cap perspective that paying him that salary would be detremental, but if they did it to get him off the books, then I assume they're gonna use that cap space? They haven't been in the black, at least not far, from what I've seen...at least from Forbes.

The Isles won't have a problem reaching the cap floor. Right now they're at 35M plus. They need to resign Hamonic, Bailey & Hickey. They need to sign or acquire a #1 goalie. Matt Donovan & Brock Nelson are virtual locks to make the opening night roster. If Nino isn't dealt he's likely to make the team as well. He's got a big cap hit. Something over 2M. Boyes isn't coming back. So they need to find somebody to take his spot. Nelson will take Reasoner's spot on the roster.

I don't see any problems reaching the cap floor for the Isles.

I was just perusing CapGeek and I noticed the Isles have EIGHT guys getting paid more than $1 million in the AHL right now with THREE making more than $2.5 million. The Islanders roster players are making about $36 million, but the non-roster players (18 in total) are making almost as much at $25 million.

How is that possible? I see most teams have roughly 1-3 non-roster guys making in the $1-1.5 million range.

But yeah, if they bring a few of those guys up to the NHL squad, they meet the cap floor no problem. Are there plans for any/several of those guys to come up to the NHL level this year, DaBolts?

Here is the list of those non-roster guys at current and their 13-14 salary:
D Reinhart, Griffin » $3,244,167
F Nelson, Brock » EL $$2,825,000
F Niederreiter, N. » EL $2,795,000
F Halmo, Mike » EL $1,775,000
D Mayfield, Scott » EL $1,775,000
G Nilsson, Anders » EL $1,750,000 RFA
F Strome, Ryan » $1,713,333 RFA
D de Haan, Calvin » $1,470,000

Also, can they buy out Yashin again? ;)

The only guys expected to make the team from the minors are Nelson & Matt Donovan who makes 875K. Nino is on the trading block. The rest likely won't cost the Isles a penny this season.

"We simply feel we are paying the players too much money" - Gary Bettman

This is "owner speak" for "The owners want to increase their own profits."
