I'm a little biased, being a Scotsman and all, but there's nothing more entertaining that some Scotsman going off on a rant.

Also, my son is looking to get a jazz drum kit; can you recommend something decent for around $1000?

How old is he, and how long has he been playing?

He turned 17 a few days ago. He's been playing for about 5 years. I don't want to sound biased, but the kid is pretty good. He practices for about 2 hours a day. Good is obviously subjective, but his HS band were offered a chance to go to the national championships.

If I didn't think he was pretty good, I wouldn't even ask the question. Take it FWIW.

TBH, I'm much more adept and knowledgeable about hand drums and percussion...not so much the sets/kits.
