Because they tend to be worse hitters than others?

Because there tends to be less good hitters at that position, so the ones that can play SS and show promise with the bat are more valuable than a guy who can only play the corners with a similar bat.

Since Bochy only signed for 3 years and Venable is being considered a "manager in waiting" you have to wonder if this isn't a way to groom/evaluate Bochy's potential replacement

Levi Weaver has an article in The Athletic this morning where he discusses what happens with all of the Rangers pitching prospects if the Rangers go out and sign two more starting pitchers. One thing he mentions is how the Astros had some of their starting pitching prospects pitch out of the big league bullpen a year or two before returning to a rotation. He mentioned Framber Valdez, Jose Urquidy, Luis Garcia, and Christian Javier as examples of the Astros using this tactic. He says the Rangers could follow that pattern. There are some problems with that suggestion though.

For one thing, the Rangers have historically had a problem converting starters into relievers and then back again to starters. One reason the Rangers have encountered problems in doing so, is that they resist moving a guy once he has had success in the bullpen. Just look to Brock Burke as a great example of this. He has no realistic shot of going back to the rotation with the Rangers.

Also, there is the question of just how unhealthy this practice is on the arm of the pitchers. Let's give those Astros a year or two to see how healthy those pitchers stay before using them as any kind of shining example of how to bring pitchers along.

Framber Valdez increased his workload 50% this year as he jumped from 134 to 201 innings. That is after increasing his innings by 90% the year before. Jose Urquidy saw his workload increase from 107 innings to 164 innings this year. That is an increase of just over 50%. Luis Garcia never really had any significant time in the major league bullpen so his experience is not really related to this discussion. Christian Javier saw his workload increase 47% this year as he went from 101 innings to 148 innings.

Over the last several years the Rangers have been extremely cautious about increasing their young starting pitchers' workloads. They were being extremely cautious with Dunning this year and some thought he was about to get shut down even before his injury. His workload only increased 30% and some were concerned about that. Last year at this time there was a lot of talk about needing to bring in guys to pitch because our young pitchers should not be expected to increase their workloads by more than about 20 to 30 innings over the previous year. To do what Weaver is suggesting would represent a big change in how much the Rangers strive to protect the arms of their young pitchers.

Also, the Rangers never suggested that they would bring back Perez and bring in 3 other starting pitchers. I think Weaver suggesting that they still will bring in two more starting pitchers is just wishful thinking on his part because he is in the group that is overly enamored with making big trades for pitching. The Odorizzy trade really irks them. Weaver and some others know the Rangers can sign a free agent pitcher and they desperately wants them to trade for another one.

It was a good article
Nice follow up

I’m in favor of the bullpen model first then the rotation.

How long do you want White, Leiter and Rocker to pitch out of our bullpen? How many innings should they pitch in their first year back in the rotation?

I wouldn’t do it with all of them. Just a case by case basis I reckon.

That’s awesome!
How do I get tickets ?
