If his talent, strength and skill level grows then Smith is an ideal leadoff hitter

Very good at making the pitcher work. If he lays off the HR swing that will help. Hit the gaps and don’t overswing. Not strong enough yet
I think eventually he will be a good enough hitter that we may want him in a spot where he can drive in runs.

Not a bad look of sportsmanship by the Astros

I wouldn't be surprised if we pursue him. A pursuit of the top pitchers may be what has kept us from signing Perez. Martin Perez might be our second or third option because of what his agent is asking for. It could be that we are only going after one high dollar pitcher and that the other pitchers we are going after will be less expensive free agents, like a Nick Martinez.

Makes sense.
I wonder how much extra $$ Kershaw would generate if we signed him.
Like would he be the one guy worth going over budget for on a 2 year deal because of the extra tickets and merchandise sales and the short length of the contract.. 2nd year would be player option I’m sure.
Degrom($42) Kershaw($20) & Martinez($8) would be about $70 million.
Would put payroll at about $172 million

If your figures are right it could be a case of Perez and Kershaw along with a cheaper pitcher, or someone more expensive like DeGrom and 2 cheaper pitchers.

The Athletic has a new article up about six possible landing spots for Aaron Judge. The Rangers are second on the list.

$38 mil a year over 8 years I think is what his contract is projected for.
I’m thinking he resigns with NYY or goes to SFG

If we sign an expensive hitter between now and 14 months from now, I would have no problem with trading away one of the two we signed last year.

From Jeff Wilson:

A Panamanian outlet reported that Roberto Kelly, the former Rangers outfielder and longtime assistant to Bruce Bochy, will be joining the Rangers staff.

I assume you mean the details? Because the steps themselves seem pretty much in-line with what we've said here.
I don't think we need Perez and a #1 starter. I think Perez, if signed, should be the #1 starter. So, right off I disagree with his first two steps when presented as 2 separate steps. The one exception for me would be Kershaw on a very short term deal.

There are parts of step 3 that I am very much against.

I completely disagree with his step 4.

In theory, I agree with his 5th step because I like the idea of pursuing a closer. It would be higher up the list for me and I wouldn't go the cheaper route he proposes.
