If they would've signed Rendon who would his contract have kept us from signing? Nobody to this point.
True but the Rangers signing him back then didn't many sense at that time either considering they knew a rebuild was imminent...

We could try to do some of all three though, and that might work. Get 2 or 3 high quality free agents. Make a trade or two at the right time. Develop the rest.
True, but you have to convince the ones looking for a ring that they can get one here, if they believe you good, if not (like in the past) they will look elsewhere :noidea:

The team still has a lot of decisions to make and weeding out to do with current players all through the system to do for next year. So don't be surprised if they don't sign anybody you consider to be high quality this year even though they are saying they will. One thing is for certain they will sign 3-4 players, they always do it seems... SP seems to be the biggest need with alot of the younguns being on innings restrictions. You only have so many roster positions to shuffle bodies thru to eat up those 1458 or more innings...

And absolutely signing a SS this year isn't that pressing when next years crop are no slouches, maybe not as young and attractive though. And by then you may not want to...

oh i'm like everyone else in that i'm looking for us to grow a team that eventually wins more than one WS. i think we should sign 2 or 3 good FA's this off-season while clearing the 40 of those who can't or won't contribute to the future and putting future contributors on it. go into next season with a team built around our youth like Huff, Jung, etc. signing one quality SP and loading the SP core with guys like Hearn, Dunning, Allard, Latz, Alexy, Otto, Winn, Vanasco, Howard, etc while watching their innings and all of them are on the 40 or will be this off-season,

i'd sign Story, Syndergaard and Chris Taylor/Mark Canha this season

All 3 of them have their warts and all are profiled to end up somewhere else because of range or glove work or arm strength :noidea:

I think a lot of the talk about Acuna is from what his older brother says about his little brother being better than him at those younger ages...
I don’t think defensively Acuna has profiled elsewhere and given where he is at the system he has not ranked higher and rightfully so

I just want the whole package and if a player can’t get it done defensively in the minors he won’t later. So I will bide my time and watch

Giants beat LAD on a shutout. Was hearing some woman commentator gushing over Astros hitters and how that would make the difference run the playoffs
I thought to myself good pitching beats good hitting and who was this?

funny I have been thinking the same thing.
We will sign at least 2 vets whether they are elite I don’t know. We will get better as our stacked MLB soon to be ready guys come up.
Maybe these young core guys develop and then we add the elite guy

I seen on another site they usual that "they thought he could also be moved to 2B or CF" (which is par for the course) and the reason why SSs are more prized in the draft than just those who only project at one spot, they're more versatile...

Give them some time to work with him on his defense before making a judgement as to where he should go in the field, he may improve dramatically or he may not :noidea:

then i would rather see the team just go strictly with our prospects because i'm tired of seeing the Lyles, Foltynewicz's, Culberson's and Holt's occupy 40 man spots and hold up progress

Yes! 100%
There’s absolutely no reason to sign any avg/Below avg players. Either go for studs who will be on the team 3+ years or go with prospects.
If we sign very good long term players there’s less need for the prospects to come up because the position is already filled.
It would be stupid to sign any 1-2 year position players.

exactly i'm tired of the "sign average to below average players" just so we can unload them at the Trade Deadline. it should be either sign studs or go with the prospects with no other option

Re signing vets.

Ha don’t shoot the messenger. I think the big question marks is who will fill all these spots and there are a lot. The FO even admitted do r expect 30 more wins this year which tells me they are not planning on seriously contending for a playoff spot. How could they?

So the big thing is this free agent class appears better than the following year which at first glance is correct but there are guys who come along and have unexpected break out years

So if we miss out on one of the big 3, I am still counting on 2 vet signings likely short term

Extremely likely to be replaced players within 2 years
1. Trevino/Heim
2 Solak
3. Peters
4. Calhoun

Likely to be replaced or to utility
Tavares
IKF

That leaves guys who may stick as Lowe, Garcia and Jung

So one or 2 guys are not enough whether BT trade, free agency or promotion

Thus SS is not a make it or break it move. Still hope we get one as is a critical position

short term deals are usually low level FA's or someone who is in FA and coming back from an injury. didn't we sign one of those in Kluber and what did we get out of that deal?

think 5 of them are gone by 2024 with some like Trevino, Calhoun and IKF probably gone this off-season

So we hear
It wasn't that he hated being there before he was moved to other positions. What he hated was the thought of being moved back there.

I think even if he had been moved back that he would have taken it better than MY did a few years earlier when they moved him around.
