This is another case of the national baseball media not knowing much about the situations of individual teams. Vanasco is a lock to be protected.

From Jeff Wilson's report today.

Everyone knows by now that the Rangers are in the midst of a rebuild. They have stripped down the payroll and added to the farm system, and are now ready to build around what they have in the majors and what is coming from the minors.

They want to put a better product on the field to give the fans a reason to come to Globe Life Field — and to spend money to help fund the payroll for future seasons.

But a key component of a rebuild is homegrown contributors, and the Rangers want/need to give their top prospects a chance. That’s especially so with starting pitching, and the Rangers actually have some talented starters and depth in their system.

Jack Leiter, Cole Winn and Ricky Vanasco lead the group, which also includes Owen White, A.J. Alexy, Glenn Otto, Cole Ragans, Cody Bradford, TK Roby, Yerry Rodriguez and others. It’s not like Dane Dunning and Taylor Hearn, who are likely to be in the 2022 rotation, are veterans.

It would be financially irresponsible and a departure from the long-range plan to load up on free agents all in one offseason. It would also be foolish to go crazy on the trade front by shipping away what should be quality depth for the big-league team for what would be shorter-term players who don’t necessarily fit with the current club.

That’s not to say the Rangers shouldn’t make any trades. If they can get Olson from Oakland, they have to do it and then work out a contract extension. They can make a big trade, but don’t want to do too much dealing.

A healthy major-league team has a healthy minor-league system, and the Rangers’ system is just now getting healthy again.

A healthy team also has some money left to play with at the trade deadline and for future offseasons. The Rangers don’t have to spend it all in one place, in other words, and officials have said that’s not their goal.

They have also looked ahead to future free-agent classes. There will be good players available this time next year and the years after that.

There has already been talk about the Rangers trading for Matt Olsen who is a free agent in 2 years. One article suggests that the Yankees would have to give up Voit and 3 prospects who are ranked as the Yankees #3, #8, and #13. Their number 3 prospect is ranked 2 slots higher than Cole Winn. That means our offer would have to start with Winn. No thanks.

Jeff Wilson had this to say this morning. (Another article suggesting Evan Grant's theory is wrong.)

The Rangers, though, left the general managers meetings last week unconvinced that the market will be stalled by the CBA negotiations. The Rangers have talked with agents about the available players and will make a deal if it’s there before deadline.

“I didn’t get the sense that the pace wasn’t normal,” president of baseball operations Jon Daniels said.

A report following the GM meetings said that some teams have told agents there could be risk in waiting until after a potential work stoppage, and some agents have told teams the same thing.

If the new CBA isn’t reached until Feb. 1, free agency would turn into an NBA-like free-for-all with only two weeks until spring training. The best deal for a player might be now, and a team might want to strike now to ensure it doesn’t get lost in the possible two-week scenario.

The Rangers have a track record of signing players before the winter meetings, which are tentatively scheduled this year for Dec. 6-8 in Orlando, Fla. If the owners lock out the players, the winter meetings won’t be conducted on the MLB side.

So, these next two weeks could be busy on the free-agent front — or busier than some might have forecast in light of the labor uncertainty.

What makes it a bad contract to me is the fact that his ERA was almost 5.00 this year. They will probably be hoping he opts out in 2 years.

Then it was a bad contract to start with thinking your way. To me it is better without the opt out.
We sure don’t want to sign high dollar contract with year 2 opt outs. Makes no sense given our window to win

the 1st 2 i could easily accept but i'm still leery about Japanese players. would rather see Castellanos
With 100 million to spend I think not. Castellanos had an opt out last contract. Bet he wants another one. So pass on him for now
