I don't think the innings limiting will be as pronounced this year, but there are still guys that struggled/got hurt last year trying to ramp up from the previous 2 years, and its going to linger on for a couple more seasons for some guys

C - Gomes
1B - Lowe
2B - Solak
3B - Jung
SS - Story
LF - Suzuki
CF - Tavares
RF - Garcia
DH - Bryant

Bench: Ibanez, Hernandez, Peters, Heim

I wouldn't use the DH spot as a permanent spot, I would constantly cycle guys through the spot to "rest" them

But Bryant, Peters, Garcia, Ibanez and Hernandez give them great positional flexibility on any given day, heck Ibanez might just beat out Solak, could even see IKF there

Not sure what I'd do with Calhoun or IKF but I can't imagine anything we'd get would contribute much this year beyond a bullpen piece anyway

Rotation: Kershaw, Gray/Stroman, Martinez, Hearn, Dunning

AAA/Bullpen Reinforcements: Otto, Allard, Howard, Alexy (AAA)

Only locks I see for our bullpen right now are Barlow, Martin and Santana

But I'm okay with having a lot of guys that can pitch multiple (2-3) innings if the circumstances warrant it

Honestly the only guy I see "blocked" is Alexy but he could probably use a little extra time in AAA since he jumped from AA, Otto's career might be as a bullpen guy anyway, and I could care less about Allard, Howard was already being used in that role anyway

I honestly see the value of bringing in Kershaw for a couple seasons (via mutual options), almost as a marketing ploy to recruit FAs with some potential high end pitching mixed in

I think that puts us a little over the 100 million number but but not by much

Will teams be required to have a minimum $100 million payroll?"
This will only keep veterans around that should be replaced by younger players and cause teams to way overpay mediocre players just to get to the minimum... :tsk:

That idea needs to be flushed...

How so? Cliff Lee exceeded the value of the contract he signed, and was an absolute stud for 3 of those seasons. Then he got hurt and missed the last year and a half, but the Phillies had already gotten their money's worth before that... the missed season was disappointing but the contract overall was not
Only considering the missed signing led us to Beltre

That's the beauty of this offseason. If those same two were available now, we could easily afford both.

Make the Union happy by raising the luxury tax threshold and getting rid of punishment, losing draft picks, for signing free agents. Leave everything else pretty much like it is. Only the low budget teams who never sign free agents would oppose that.

I agree.
Maybe the teams that lose a valuable player they offer a decent contract to get an extra pick in the 2nd/3rd round. Not taking away from the club that signed the player.

This is exactly the kind of thing Evan told me would not happen. I don't think a lot of the big names are going to last until December.

you have really got to stop taking the word of the media and the people speaking to the media.

I didn't take his word for it. I told him I disagreed with him. We went back and forth on the subject several times.

Passan describes the turn of events as "unexpected." I'm sure whatever info Evan had is similar to what Passan must've had. there's countless examples of "reports" saying one thing only to turn out being completely untrue. these media guys are great for speculation but that's all it is. no one knows anything of actual substance until someone signs on the dotted line.

on the MLB subreddit they are actually wanting a ban of Jon Heyman tweets because he just throws out conjecture like he's getting paid by the word.

You have to wonder if the players know something that he doesn’t

I think it is "unexpected" because the media groupthink had it going the other way. When I proposed something outside of Evan's "box" he immediately discounted it.

I'm sure that's a big part of it, yeah. Which just furthers my point that we shouldn't put any stock into what these guys are saying.

In the Reddit comments on this article, they're dismissing the report as an effort by Boras to drum up attention for his clients (who are competing with Correa and Story for contracts). Maybe, maybe not. It's within the realm of possibility I guess.

None of it really matters though. My concern is with what the Rangers actually do, and until they actually do something, no one knows anything.

Take this tweet for example.

Now, I could sit here and say "why aren't I seeing reports of the Rangers doing this?" But when you think about it, just because there aren't reports of it doesn't mean it hasn't happened. And even if it has happened... so what? I would expect the FO to have been in contact with free agents. Reporting on it is basically the equivalent of saying water is wet. And it has no bearing on who the Rangers do or don't sign.

You get the good and the bad with the media. That goes for local and national. If you are following the Rangers hot stove you have to follow those in the media who are reporting on hot stove issues. You just learn to filter some of the stuff and use some common sense. Sometimes you present guys like Evan with common sense and they balk at it because no one "in the know" has presented it like that.

You cannot discount everything they say though. They do get some things right at times that we would never be able to. There is a very fine line between trusting them and trusting them too much.

The error I see some fans make is picking and choosing who they will listen to based on if they agree with the media member or not, about certain things. I have seen people dislike some in the local media because the media member wasn't enough of a homer, or because they dared to call out a manager or a GM.

I would like to see reports that we have talked to all three. I think those talks are a lot harder to hide than it was 5 years ago. I think a great percentage of them are reported on, these days.

Sometimes the media says things based on sources and sometimes they say things based on suppositions.
