And Bill Meltzer would agree w you awaz. It's the Flyers fans like me who need to be patient and just let the boys groom into their roles. I will be okay w whatever Homer does at this point. I will say this however, the Flyers need to shred some cap space. Bryzy and Briere is a start. Timo's contract has only 1 year and maybe we will be in better standing as far as cap space? Doesn't solve the dmen issues.

going in to next year, i fully believe the defensive issues are 97% playing style related. timonen will need replaced by the start of the 2014/2015 season, but as it stands now, the flyers have good dmen, they just play to their weaknesses. overpaying for a dman to try to fit a certain style is an awful way to build a hockey team.

i mean seriously, look at the flyers dmen, which of them 'caused' the flyers defensive problems last year?

timonen? :-)lol:)
coburn? (certainly not up to his '12 playoff caliber, but still no slouch)
mesz? (his injuries didnt help)
grossmann? (another 'when healthy he was good')
schenn? (best defender on the team last year IMO)
gus? (wasn't great, but only played a handful of games and looked better at the end of the season)
lauridsen? (shouldn't have been in the lineup anyway, but looked promising thrust in to that role)
gervais? (when he played on the bottom pair as he was slated, he was a pleasant surprise IMO)
huskins? (wont be on the team, but another plug of his caliber would be satisfactory)

obviously they could be improved, but every position on the team can be improved aside from maybe 1C.

Every single one of these defensemen will look 10 times better next year without Bryz covering the puck inside our zone for no reason, not being able to get behind the net to stop a wraparound and causing turnovers on clearouts all contributing to all 5 players having to play in our zone way more than we should have probably an extra 5 minutes total of running around in our zone all because of amateurish puck handling skills

i agree 100%.. and for similar puck-handling reasons, i would consider mike smith as a UFA signing to compete with mason.. i know we've been down the 'elite' phoenix goalies road before, but having a goalie who can move the puck can be a serious weapon, and a serious help to the defense.. mike smith is 2nd only to brodeur in the stick-handling department

If they could get him,for even double his salary,it would be a good move.

Lmao. Which is it? I want the Fin dman, awaz wants the other dman, forgot his name. Now you are back on the Russian?

I can't decide, and now with the Streit acquisition my mind is pack on offensive defenseman. So back to Ristolainen. I won't be mad with Pulock or Nichushkin though :)

Lol. I'll be happy with any of these guys mentioned. I think we should deal either Mez or Coburn and get some additional picks back in return. It sheds salary, we could possibly even squeeze a young forward in return. Load up our farm again w some talent.

Just out of curiosity are the Flyers considering turning Couturier into a defenseman? I mean he certainly didn't do much offensively last season.

I haven't seen anything about them doing that. Would be an interesting experiment though. I wanted them to give read a shot on defense during the season. Solid two way guy, tons of speed, and played a good amount on the point for the power play. Never thought about coots though. He'd need to add some weight I think, but I could see it.
