Wow, I'm guessing most of you Bear diehards were watching the conclusion of the Rams-Packers game. But for those who missed it, Ty Montgomery made the bonehead play of the week. Let me give you the set up.

The Rams had just pulled ahead on a FG for a 29-27 lead with 2:05 left in the game. I bolded the time because this is key. It should be noted here that GB had one timeout remaining. So the Rams kick off and Montgomery takes it about 3-4 yards in the endzone. He ran it out and got hit around the 20 yard line or so where he subsequently fumbled the ball back to the Rams. It's not the fumble per se that I called this a huge mistake, altho it obviously ended up costing the Packers the game. But it's his decision to run it out that I thought was really a poor decision. It immediately started the clock running past the 2 minute warning. Even if he hadn't fumbled, he would have ended up at best on the 20 instead of downing it with the ball on the 25, as well as costing the Packers a free time out with the loss of the 2 minute warning that still would have been in play had he downed the kickoff. Who knows how it would have ended if the Pack kept the ball - we all know how dangerous Rodgers is even with less than 2 minutes and a timeout still in his pocket. With an additional extra 'time out' due to the warning, it would have made him even more dangerous. As it stands, we are now back in 2nd place, and pending Minny's game against the red hot Saints, we may even be back in a tie for first by day's end. Thank you Ty.

Back to the huge mistake, after reading up on some of the other sports sites, apparently Montgomery was told by the Packers staff that if the KO made it into the endzone, he was to take a knee. He was supposedly upset at not being used enough and ran the ball out to I guess either prove his worth or silently telling McCarthy to stick it. Wouldn't shock me if he gets cut. All I know is this. Year after year, including this one, a lot of folks overhype the Packers as a prime SB contender, and year after year they perform to their true talent level. A lot of season left, but right now they may not even make the postseason, let alone a trip to the big show.

Cohen tried to make a similar mistake.

I don't really understand what he was thinking.

My only guess was that perhaps he thought a Jet touched the ball first? If not, he literally just ran up to a ball on the ground in front of multiple charging Jets players and tapped it live. Weird

Great news for me having Aaron Jones on my fantasy team. lol. He also had a big day on the ground himself.

However, Montgomery's versatility makes him a valuable player to Green Bay. I don't think he's had a screw up like this prior. He'll probably get a good chewing out and have to apologize. I'm sure he feels like a dumbass and I'd be stunned if he repeats this type of behavior.

With all the injuries at WR while having Williams and Jones handling RB duties, it makes more sense to put Montgomery back at WR, or at least some type of hybrid role. But, McCarthy doesn't have the kind of ingenuity to make that be something hard for defenses to deal with.

Sure enough, Montgomery's mistake did not go unpunished. The Packers traded him to the Ravens for a 7th round pick.......in 2020. I think in the world of NFL transactions, that's called a Fuck You trade.

That's brutal man. I get it... but it's not how I would have handled it. Seems very knee jerk.

I'm not a member of the team or staff, though. I'm sure they talked it over and obviously know more than us.

It's not knee jerk if it's true that he defied their order to take a knee if the KO went into the endzone, which it did. And from what I've read, he indeed defied those instructions. If I was GM, I'd have done the same thing.

I hear you. He's done a lot for them, though. Worn many different hats and never bitched about all of the changes that have been made with his role. Tough business, I suppose. One irreparable fuck up and good bye.

As I initially mentioned, I honestly think the fumble itself was secondary. If he was given the green light to run that KO out, then it simply would have been an unfortunate play. I really believe it was the defiance that sent him packin' (pardon the pun).
