Starting fullback David Johnson suffered what coach Mike Tomlin called a "significant knee injury" during the first quarter of the Steelers' 24-23 preseason loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night. Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Johnson tore his anterior cruciate ligament and is lost for the season.

Pre season is stupid. If marv only ran out the fringe guys for the first couple games I'd have no issue with it. In fact, I'd applaud it.

eh, injuries happen. With Matthews it was the very first play. Could have happened anywhere, anytime.

Though, going down to 3 pre-season games would be ideal, I don't see NFL players agreeing to extend the regular season. Especially after all the groaning and moaning about injuries/head injuries.

Also, coaches want pre-season games to evaluate their backups. Sucks that starters go out there for less than a quarter and get hurt, but that's just part of the game. You move on.

I can't say I agree with sitting out the main guys the first couple games, but I would mind seeing them get only 1 series tonight and 2 series next week. Although 3 series over 2 weeks may not seem substantive, but you always have to give your players an elongated opportunity to get re-acclimated to real-time game speed. A series or 2 the first couple weeks followed by a half in week 3 should suffice.

A side note: After watching part of the Steelers game yesterday and reading other recaps, the NFL needs to quit playing games and get the refs back on the field. The replacement refs are not going to cut it when the games matter.

Agreed. I think this is one of those things that could really damage the early part of the season. Even if the drop-off weren't that large (which is a prayer for the league), any missed calls will be magnified and it will become a huge PR issue for the league.

I think it depends on your team. With the Bengals, I wouldnt have an issue if a lot of the starters did not play a snap in game 1. Played a series or two in game 2, etc. etc. I see no reason to have had Ryan Mathews on the field in the first pre season game. I see no reason why Aaron Rodgers, Brady, Brees etc would play in the first two pre season games.

Agree about the refs. I watched the first series of the GB game and Nick Perry got flagged for unsportsman like conduct when he did much less than Clay mathews does when he makes a tackle. So much money in the NFL. Throw the refs a bone and dont compromise your product.

I dont see why it has to be part of the game. Especially the first pre season game. I guess I see everything in terms of risk v. reward. What is the upside in having mathews play a series? He's been in the league a few years. he knows what he's doing. Not saying that he shouldnt play at all in the pre season, but I see no reason why he would need to make an appearance in 4 pre season games. I guess now he doesnt.
