The San Antonio Spurs are finalizing a five-year, $45 million contract extension for center Tiago Splitter, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Splitter, 28, developed into an important part of the Spurs' run to the NBA Finals and had significant interest around the league as a restricted free agent.

Portland had strongly considered signing Splitter to an offer sheet near the $9 million salary that Spurs paid, but Splitter's representatives and San Antonio worked out most of the details of an agreement on Monday night and into Tuesday, sources said.

Splitter averaged 10.5 points and 6.4 rebounds for the Spurs, and will be an important part of the franchise's eventual transition beyond Tim Duncan. The Spurs drafted the Brazilian with the 28th pick in 2007.

The Spurs will turn their attention to re-signing two of their own free agents, Manu Ginobili and Gary Neal.

Looks like the Spurs are quite satisfied with being an elite team, but not a championship team. I would have rather gambled on Al Jefferson.

Looks like Yahoo corrected itself

The San Antonio Spurs are finalizing a four-year, $36 million-plus contract extension for center Tiago Splitter, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Ginobili looks done right now.
He was quoted about a week ago that he wanted to play one more year. If the Spurs don't make an offer, I doubt he latches onto another team. He'll probably retire.

They had to make it though if they wanted to keep going with Timmy. Duncan's minutes are going limited and Splitter matters against teams not named Miami or OKC.

Splitter is a very good player. Good job, Spurs.

Genobilli, on the other hand, needs to be signed and traded. He really stunk up some games this year, most notably the last game. The Spurs should be able to get somebody decent for him.

Heck, see if the Celtics will trade Rondo straight up for him!

he is not worth that amount of money. 9 million a season? that's almost 1 million for every point he averages. and he rebounds like a bitch for a man of his height. this contract is horrible. duncan is great. but he going to retire well before this deal is over. splitter and his 9 million will become a noose around the spurs neck in a season or two.

ginobili sucked in the finals? so did tiago. he averaged 4.9 points and 2.0 boards and shot under 45% against the heat... a team which had absolutely no answer to hibbert and an undersized front line.

you guys must have watched a different finals than me.. did the heat win the won you guys watched too?

You are under the bold assumption that the Spurs are trying to beat the Heat. The Spurs are building the best team they can and hoping that they dodge the Heat next year. James Harden sucked against the Heat...good thing OKC got rid of that bum

Ginobli sucked all playoffs. Splitter was valuable against the Grizzlies

Harden sucked in the Finals due to his style of play and how the Heat defend against it. Splitter is essentially a good screen man and a body in the paint - hardly worth $9 mil per season. The Heat may be in the Finals again next season. Out of the East it will be Chicago, Miami or Indiana. If you're going to go with the field, then there's not many options other than the one's I listed.

The Spurs also have to account for another athletic team in their own conference which is OKC and you can make the argument of Golden St. getting better. But I have my reservations about the latter.

Yeah, they won in all right - because of a luck shot by Ray Allen to close out the 6th. And they won it because Genobilli stunk up the court in the 7th.

Splitter will get better. Genobilli will continue to get worse as he ages.

Yes, he was. Without Splitter to dominate Zach and rule the paint the Spurs do not win that series.

It will be interesting to see what Harden can do if the Rockets get Howard. Very interesting.

This is a good signing.
It is a fair price for a younger true center who can play.

He is entering his prime and the Spurs will keep adding his minutes.
That helps keep Duncan at an all NBA level with reduced minutes.

More importantly, the Spurs look at his progression and improvement as a 3rd year player.
In every major statistical category he has improved each year in his first 3 years.

What NBA GM would walk away from a 20 something 7 footer who is rapidly improving each year???
When you have such an upwards arc, you don't suddenly bail on your investment.

Even now, He plays great post defense.
He can keep teams like the Lakers and Grizzlies from dominating the smaller Spurs.
It wasn't as effective versus Miami, as there is no need for post defense vs. the HEAT.
He was instrumental in beating the Grizzlies with his post defense against Gasol/Randolph.
They don't beat Memphis without him. 2011 all over again.

He played poorly in the finals..... so what???

Everyone played poorly in the finals except LeBron and Duncan.....maybe Leonard/Green.

Parker, Ginobili, Wade, Bosh, Battier, Chalmers, Bonner, Miller, Birdman seemingly all took turns stinking up the court. Nobody had any consistent good play.

Even with the uneven play, it was 3 missed free throws from a title.
