There has been a lot of drama and back and forth between the Coyotes and the Goldwater Institute lately, it looks like Hulszier just changed the deal to effectively kill the Goldwater Institute's lawsuit, which means the team will likely stay in Phoenix.

Matt Hulsizer Guarantees Glendale Bond, Kills Goldwater Case - Five For Howling

In reality, this should give Phoenix a few more good years. With a good, young, team on the ice, and a market that has proven to be fickle, yet supportive of a winner... we'll see what happens. If in a few years Phoenix is still a financial disaster, then I think relocation should come back up as a topic.

Dont mess with my Pacific Division :usa:

Good. They need to stay there for five more years. If I'm going to be in Tucson for graduate school, I'm going to need some hockey to watch.

This whole fiasco isn't about where this team belongs, it's about Bettman trying very hard not to be proven wrong. He showed in this case he was even willing to break the law to keep a team where it will continue to lose money. He never fought even a tenth as hard to keep the team in Winnipeg all those years ago, proving really once and for all he is anti Canadian.

Phoenix doesn't deserve this team in the least and the thought they might win a cup there makes me sick, but what can you do, this is Bettman's NHL. As long as 80% of the owners in this league are American, that corrupt little weasel will still be in power.

More word tonight, this new concession by Hulsizer has not bought off Goldwater. They are still planning to block the sale.

But Goldwater now has zero legal case. With this new development, it looks very unlikely there will be hockey in Winnipeg next year.

Its not an American vs Canadian thing, its a growing the game versus compartmentalizing as a regional, niche game. I think any rational person can dismiss your comment that all Bettman cares about is having 80% of the owners be American as completely irrational. Phoenix has a much larger potential market, and sure they had some bad years of attendance, etc, but there were some factors that hurt:

1) Phoenix got slammed by housing market
2) Rumors of the team moving
3) The team has been BAD

Now that some of these are no longer factors, coupled with the fact that Phoenix is a market that can get behind a decent team, you might see conditions change. If you think the team should be moved to Winnipeg; fine. But don't complain when your favorite league becomes irrelevant.

Also, the NHL has never said they would move the team back to Winnipeg. In fact they have been very silent on the matter. It is very likely the NHL is exploring other US, growth based, markets over Winnipeg as a backup option in the event the team is moved from Phoenix.

kansas city and las vegas, in that order, are my guesses of where the team would end up if the yotes were to relocate

I think Vegas might be ahead of KC because the team would still be close to Phx and could keep a lot of fans on TV and hardcore fans may make a Vegas run for weekend games

If Goldwater had zero legal case, they would have taken the deal in a heartbeat. If anything else, that 'concession' Hulsizer made yesterday only made Goldwater's point: The NHL knows this deal is shady and is trying to throw money at it to make it go away. That deal doesn't even address what it claims to which is even funnier.

And spare me the excuses of why Phoenix loses money. They lost money even in the years they were in the playoffs when the first moved. 16 total years of bleeding money from taxpayers.

Their first few years in the NHL they played in an arena where 1/3 of the seats couldn't even see both goals. Real money making conditions.

In this situation, the investment on the arena has been made, and Hulsizer guaranteed the taxpayers would get a large return on their investment. It would be stupid to cut and run now.

Yes but still, you can't argue Goldwater's position on the Coyotes being a risk to taxpayers. They have lost money for 16 straight years. What makes them think it will stop now? Plus the deal still violates Arizona law even with the new extras.

lol...Do you happen to know when the NHL was at its height of popularity in the United States? It was back in 1994 when the Jets were in the league and all Phoenix had was the Suns and golf courses.

a tsn poster had a good idea about a new name for a potential winnipeg team (with help from George Costanzas dad)

call them the Winnipeg Phoenix (rising out of the ashes ... from the desert)

Part of me hopes Hulsizer wins and I agree with giving the Coyotes another five years in Glendale. That should be just enough time for Hulsizer to declare bankruptcy and put the taxpayers of Glendale in even more dire straits.

anyhow, the people of winnipeg are prob more worried right now about David Thompson looking at buying the maple leafs from the ontario teachers pension fund instead of part-owning a winnipeg franchise with Chipman
