Weren't the Flames a few inches away from moving to Houston? And the Sens couldn't make their payroll a couple of times? I really don't think there's any anti-Canadian bias going on. Some questionable expansion decisions, but it's not anti-Canadian.

Those were the Oilers that almost moved to Houston - The EIG (Edmonton Investment Group) stepped up to the plate at the 11th hour to save the day (and make no mistake, the moving trucks were getting loaded, it was that close). The Flames were having some financial issues, but it was never as dire as it was in Edmonton.

The Sens did indeed go bankrupt (bad ownership decisions etc.) and to Gary's credit, he did fight to save the team in Ottawa (of course, one could argue that it was Gary's ego that motivated him since he played a prominent role in getting Ottawa the franchise in the first place).

Just my opinion, but I think Gary is getting considerable heat from NHL owners about how quickly the salary cap has risen since coming out of the lockout (mainly from the smaller market teams would be my guess). Thus, it doesn't make sense to move a team to Quebec City where it would be successful and add additional league revenue which would drive the salary cap ceiling (as well as the salary cap floor) even higher.

I posted this 2 weeks ago and no i dont think there is anti cdn sentiment now ... there is however an "anti-moving a team to a market with a higher revenue generating capability" sentiment ... if the owners get a win on the next cba (ie giving the players a fixed non changing % of total leaguewide revenue) and the dollar stays high ... i think then teams will come back to canada

who knows where this is going ... total league revenue is being boosted by 10 teams maybe and the other teams are pretty much stagnant ... the more revenues rise ... the higher the cap ceiling and floor ... and the more teams at the bottom end that can barely survive with that floor number.

and what do they do when those teams struggling to meet the floor end up moving to a different market ... maybe Winnipeg ... Quebec City ... Southern Ontario

Lets just say the bottom 3 revenue generating teams relocate ... Islanders, Coyotes, Thrashers to Winnipeg Quebec City and Southern Ontario ... also lets assume these 3 new markets generate an average of 85 million in revenue (which I think is conservative)

my quick math 85 x 3 = 255 mill
islanders, coyotes thrashers generated 201 mill (according to forbes in 09-10)

so 54 mill in added league revenue with the 3 new markets

which means the cap would go up another possible 2 mill??? bit of a disincentive for the league to relocate because we might as well add another couple of teams that cant meet the cap floor

I agree with trying to get the whole state involved. But its pretty evident that they just cant fill that arena... I definitely see BUST in the near future, not that its not there already.

I agree. Hulsizer is in this for the money he's gonna get now. Once the guaranteed money is gone (after 6 years I think) he'll bolt.

Can he though? I guess he could try to find somebody else to buy the team (hello Ballsy?) but the lease agreement he signed makes it pretty tough to move the team for another 23 years.

Maybe not, I can't help but think that buried somewhere in the fine print is an escape clause though.

I mean...I think a LOT of it has to do with the area in AZ as well. It's a lot of snowbirds and displaced people, not a TON of natives. So you get a lot of fans with loyalties already. If you look at the other AZ teams, they get fans when the team is VERY successful. Like in the NHL playoffs with the Coyotes, and when the Cards got to the SB, the diamondbacks when they were really good, etc. So, if the Yotes get GOOD and QUICK they can end up being successful, but it may end up just being a detriment.

All I know is after the 2014/2015 season the Islanders lease is up. Garth Snow has said they won't play in the NVMC any longer than they have too. I've asked on the Islanders fan site if there was anyone who would buy the team & keep them in L.I. & nobody has come up with a single person or group who would.

Wang seems to be it. If he can't keep the Isles in L.I. I don't know of anyone else who could.

I was hoping the Coyotes would move to Canada because Glendale/Phoenix is a Football/Basketball town. They just don't care about the Yotes.

In L.I. it's a different story. The fans are out their. They're just sick & tired of seeing their team run into the ground by bad management/ownership.

its not just the demographics ... location location location ... what ... Sunrise Florida wasnt a good enough example of where not to put an arena???

If i remember the area was chosen for the arena because the original owner was planning a huge real estate development (condo and mall) surrounding the arena

Glendale is what 20 miles from downtown Phoenix?

its one thing for people to go to Glendale to watch the Cardinals play one sunday afternoon every 2 weeks

how do you get people to go to the midweek evening game between the coyotes and the canucks other than having them fly in from vancouver
