So which hole do we try to fill with our top 5 pick at the end of the year?

It's also time for me to give up on Reiff. He was dang good last year. His weaknesses are showing this season for a zone scheme. Can't defend him any longer on it.

With that said, I do think he can still defend the blind side in a power scheme. Completely different world there.

I'm not sure why people think these guys can block in a power scheme when they haven't been able to get any type of push on any team for years and years.

I wish I could agree, but you are talking about the Lions as if last year was the norm, instead of an anomaly. We faced a Giants team without Odell Beckham. We faced Minnesota twice without Adrian Peterson and with a rookie QB. We faced Arizona with Drew Stanton at QB. We faced Chicago on the road with Jimmy Claussen at QB. Look at the rest we faced -- Kyle Orton in his 1st start in a couple years. Josh McCown with the Bucs. Geno Smith.

Detroit defense was very good last year, but average against very good teams. Their best game of the season was week 3. They caught every break possible last year and still couldn't win the division.

Do I think Suh would make the Lions defense better? Absolutely. He knows the scheme and the players around him. Do I think Suh would have changed the outcome of this year through 5 games? No. Levy would still be hurt. Tulloch would still look a step slower. Mathis would still look his age. Our offensive line would still be one of the worst in the league. Our QB would still be throwing interceptions. Our offense would be leading the league in fumbles.

Detroit is still pressuring the QB. They are still getting sacks. Teams are picking apart the Lions over the middle of the field and with no Levy and Tulloch not being able to cover anybody -- It wouldn't matter. The one team who ran the ball on the Lions was Adrian Peterson, who has always run the ball on the Lions, so it isn't something new. Arizona did last week, but from watching the game back -- it seemed as if the defense gave up once the offense decided they wanted to see how many times they can turn the ball over in one game.

I know you love Suh. We all loved having him on the Lions. He is not and will never be worth 19 million dollars a year. You see what happened in Miami when you don't have players with the proper skill set surrounding him. Miami is going to have to bring in players with the skill set to take advantage of having Suh at DT. That takes money. That is why you didn't see teams lining up to sign Suh. Everyone would love to have him, but every would love to have him as the highest paid DT, as that is what he plays.

Sorry for the book. I just wanted to explain myself.

Last season was absolutely an anomaly, which is why I had picked them to go 5-11. Which they easily could have done if not for the D carrying them.

Years of bad drafts were masked by our big 3 for years. This year just happened to be the year it all caved in w Suh gone and Calvin past his prime.

What exactly did they mask? We didn't win anything over the last 5 years. We were basically in the upper tier of the mediocre teams. We could beat the bottom feeders and lose to the good teams. Seems like the 0-5 start falls right in line with the last 5 years -- it just so happens, we started with an extremely tough schedule.

An otherwise shitty team thanks to years of bad drafting by Mayhew (and before that, years of bad drafting by the previous GM).

Without those 3, the Lions average 1-2 wins a year over the last 6 years based on the rest of the roster.

That I can agree with. But I'm thinking if you did that with any team -- they would be terrible too.

Put Suh and Calvin on almost any other team for 5 years in a row, and I guarantee they win more than the Lions did.

I don't doubt that. I'm sure if you put them on a few teams, they'd do worse too.

Get a OC who has a power scheme. Otherwise Reiff is not your LT.

He isn't a bad LT, but i still think he would be a stud RT in a power scheme. If we get a top pick stud LT would be my top choice followed by DE and DT. If somehow Caldwell and Lombardi are here next year they better spend a couple of later picks on athletic guards that actually fit the blocking scheme we use. Why the fuck did they draft Tomlinson if they were going to stay with this stupid fucking blocking scheme again? :mad2:

Browns, Raiders, maybe the Jags. Most teams never ever have two guys like Suh and Calvin at the same time, let alone for 5 years. What a waste.

Still have to pass in the NFL. No matter the scheme, I'd prefer Reiff at right tackle.

So was all that Reiff talk from the Lions just smokescreen? And if they really felt he'd make a better RT then why pass on Taylor Lewan? So frustrating.

I agree it was a waste. More so with Calvin though. He is a once in a lifetime type of WR. When Jerry Rice calls you the greatest WR of all time -- you know you are special. You just don't see WR's run 4.3 40 at 6'5" 240 lbs and have a 40+ inch vertical.

And this isn't a knock on Suh -- I think he is a great player and one of the best DT in the NFL right now.

Is it just me or have most of the LTs in recent drafts been busts so far?

I don't like LT from the B12 or any school that runs that BS spread. A lot of quick passes and the kids rarely ever put a hand in the dirt. They're great until they need to protect for more than 3 seconds.

I just sad in another thread that college is killing the development of QBs and OL and they're not pro ready by any means at all.

Last few years have seemed like a lot of reachs, looking back on it.

But I meant as a dude. Not a fan of that hipster wannabe/r*pe coconspirator.

I don't work for the Lions, Bro. My opinion on Reiff isn't necessarily the Lions'. I don't know if there's any reason to think the Lions didn't think Reiff would be a better LT this year than last year. I can't say there's any reason for Reiff to not be a better LT this year than last year.

smartest comment I've read in weeks on this board.

Seahawks assistant says the spread offense is making college players worse

I sent the above article to Coach_Ed months ago.

2013 Fisher, Joeckel and Johnson all have battled injuries and have shown very little. 2012 pick Kahlil @ Minny has turned into a human turn-style. No-one from last year can be judged just yet.

No one is talking about under-the radar LT from Stanford, Kyle Murphy this year. He comes from a pro-style offense, unlike Ronnie Stanley (who likes like absolute garbage to date) and Ole Piss LT Laremy Tunsil who is coming off of two significant leg injuries and hasn't played a down yet due to suspension from accepting improper benefits.

I've watched Murphy 3x this year, @ NW where he looked slightly better than average but against @ USC and tonight's game at home vs. UCLA he has been lights out. He reminds me of a collegiate Tony Boselli. Exceptional bend at the knees and sinking of hips, driving defenders to second level with ease, near perfect mechanics (latches on some but keeps his elbows inside so as not to draw penalties, extremely quick feet and recovery speed in upper body, solid punch with good hand placement, able to mirror and re-direct. Stanford killed UCLA 2-nite 56-35 and those last two scores by UCLA were with 2nd and 3rd string Stanford players throughout entire 4th qtr. when game was already in hand.
