Chicago already had MJ's number retired at the time. He wore 45 for the final 22 games of the season and playoffs. Then switched back to 23 for the following season.

A little different than Kobe's situation.

It's not different than Magic's situation. Magic's number was retired in 1992. When Magic came back to the Lakers in '96, he wore #32 again. I don't think the Lakers officially "unretired" it (as they would have had to do if Shaq wanted to remain #32 when he came to the Lakers) because it wasn't a different player.

Didn't Pat Riley retire 23 in Miami to honor Jordan? If so LeBron wouldn't have been able to wear it in there anyway.

MJ had the option back then. Any player can chose to have their number taken out of retirement. He just decided to take #45 because that's the number he originally wanted when he came into the league.
I'm sure there's a process that has to be gone through per league rules.

Actually I was wrong in my last post. He switched from 45 to 23 during the series against Orlando in 95'

The NBA fined Michael Jordan $5,000 Thursday for wearing white sneakers while his teammates wore black ones Wednesday night, and hit the Chicago Bulls for $25,000 for letting him change uniform numbers from 45 to 23.

Said Deputy Commissioner Russ Granik in a prepared statement: "If the team continues to permit him to appear (with) a number other than 45, in violation of league policy, the matter will be dealt with in an appropriate manner at the end of the season."

"(Jordan) is really adamant about wearing that number (23)," Coach Phil Jackson said. "I think he was responding to the comment ( Orlando's Nick Anderson) he wasn't the same old 23. I think that was his response: 'OK, check this out.'

Yes, they retired it in 2007. I wonder if they would have "unretired" it if Lebron had insisted that he wanted to wear it?

You seem to be the only one that doesn't understand. Nobody has a problem with him switching his jersey, its the bullshit reason he gave everybody. So you look real dumb bringing up Kobe.

Well, you know how JD loves him some Kobe. Just can't stop talking about him.

I don't. I just find it hilarious that he gave this big speech to make himself look humble and then ignores his own comments

Actually I didn't start this topic to discuss what numbers certain players wear; it's about the fact Cavs fans were so furious Lebron left the first time, they burned his jersey. And now they have to buy the same one again.

Would have been a different matter altogether if he stayed with #6

So if it doesn't meet your approval it's a troll thread?

I'm sorry. Shall we start a topic where we discuss organisations paying guys who've never coached an NBA game in their life $5m a year?

That's how I interpreted the OP and then this turned into LeBron vs Kobe and who should be allowed to wear what number.

Reminds me of that old game where you sit in a circle and one person whispers something to the next and then they are supposed to repeat it word-for-word to the next until it gets back to the first one to see how much the original sentence changed.

You implied that he decided to switch numbers AFTER he decided to leave Cleveland. That wasn't the case.

I brought him up because how many other players have switched numbers, while with the same team, other than Kobe?

OP said James did it as a marketing ploy, trolling Cavs fans. I brought up Kobe because he definitely did it for marketing reasons.

It didn't turn into that all.

Might want to re-read again. You've had problems lately comprehending.
