one of the best hittersagaint the astos...

  • Elvis Andrus (34): Andrus is arguably the top unsigned free agent infielder. The 14-year veteran still brings a high-contact bat and quality baserunning to the table. Public defensive metrics have been divided on his work recently, with Statcast’s Outs Above Average generally rating him as an above-average shortstop despite less enthusiastic reviews from Defensive Runs Saved. Andrus looked like a glove-only player after hitting .255/.302/.360 from 2018-21, but he bounced back with a solid 2022 campaign. He hit .249/.303/.404 with 17 home runs (the second-highest total of his career) last season. That included a very strong finish, as Andrus hit .271/.309/.464 in 43 games with the White Sox after the A’s released him in mid-August in a move seemingly motivated by a desire to keep him from vesting a $15MM option in his contract for the 2023 season.

These 9 remaining free agents make sense for Angels...

Shortstop: Elvis Andrus

The Angels are in a bit of a weird spot with their infield. They’ve acquired two players — Gio Urshela and Brandon Drury — who should get significant playing time. Neither of them plays shortstop.

David Fletcher is the team’s most conventional shortstop. But there are questions about his bat after two ineffective seasons. Luis Rengifo had a breakout offensive season in 2022, but he’s not a great defensive player — despite a rather surprising Gold Glove nomination in the utility category.

The question is if the Angels would still want to add a shortstop. Andrus fits that, theoretically. But whatever he gets paid — FanGraphs projects $20 million over two years — might not be better than what the Angels already have. Andrus had a great 43-game stretch with the White Sox. But he’s been in an overall decline for years now....

Reliever: Andrew Chafin

The lefty Chafin has been one of the most consistently reliable relievers in the game for a while. He had a 2.83 ERA and 1.169 WHIP with the Tigers last season.

The Angels entered last season feeling pretty good about signing Archie Bradley, Aaron Loup and Ryan Tepera. None of them were great, while Tepera was certainly the most solid of the group.

The team added Carlos Estévez this offseason but could really use at least one more proven reliever. Chafin fits that description perfectly.

Starting pitcher: Johnny Cueto

Cueto makes a lot of sense for the Angels. They still have a need for a sixth starter, and Cueto will be turning 37 before the season. That’s a good fit for a six-man rotation.

Cueto was excellent with the White Sox last year. He chipped in 158 1/3 innings over 25 appearances. That came with a 3.35 ERA. He works efficiently and goes deep into games. He would be a right-hander in a rotation full of lefties. And he’s got a wealth of experience, which pairs nicely with a fairly young Angels pitching staff.

The projected salary for Cueto is $8 million over one year. Seems reasonable and in the Angels’ price range, if they’re being forthright about their ability to

First Base: Brandon Belt (3.4 fWAR)

For 12 years the Rockies have been victim to the likes of Brandon Belt. At Coors Field alone, Belt has swatted 16 home runs and driven in 47 runs in 82 games with a tOPS+ of 128. For most of his career, he has been a fairly reliable bat, good for at least 15 home runs, a solid batting average, and a strong OPS. Not to mention he has also been a solid glove at first base, but therein lies the problem.

i have to think..he is sign ing with san fran

Maybe a reunion?

Rumors about a Chris Taylor trade are currently circulating, as LA will have to pay Bauer a hefty sum whether they release him or keep him on the roster.

Daniel Preciado of Game Day tweeted that he believes the Dodgers will trade Taylor. However, it is unclear whether he has any sources to back up his claim. Nonetheless, many have speculated on a Chris Taylor trade as the Dodgers try to avoid the luxury tax in the wake of Trevor Bauer‘s uncertain status.

Chris Taylor will earn $15 million in 2023. The versatile veteran will then earn $13 million in 2024 and 2025, with a club option for $12 million in 2026. His transaction is large enough to affect the luxury tax threshold. Teams would almost certainly inquire about trading for Taylor if he became available.

Can’t we just trade for Bauer instead? Taylor would be an upgrade for 100% but, I can’t believe this is a serious statement that I could honestly hear Jerry saying, but when and where would Dylan Moore play?

Plus, if they are going to get significantly better offensively, might as well try to make the best pitching staff possible and open up all pitchers for trades.

this could help the mariners.....i would take..taylor over....elvis..andrus...and the need for a DH..would not be....

and reynolds could ..still..be on....taylor as well is more outfield..at this point..but...a backup..1b.....is something...as..well...and you could always trade.
taylor for...that..depending...

from now till...deadline for a try out....ok..then..see how everyone likes it..ok then......if it works..
