Speaking of rumors:
Mariota draws interest from the Bears, Patriots
Marcus Mariota was reportedly given an ultimatum by the Las Vegas Raiders to accept a $7 million pay cut or be released. Mariota reportedly is unlikely to agree to the pay cut because he “believes he has options,” an indication there are other teams interested in him.
Two teams who are interested are the Chicago Bears and the New England Patriots, according to a report.
The Patriots re-signed Cam Newton to a one-year deal worth up to $14 million. Newton struggled during his first season, and he was benched after poor performances during three games during the season. Newton posted a record of 7-8 during his starts and the Patriots finished with a 7-9 record in 2020, missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2008 season.
The Patriots could sign Mariota if he’s released and create competition for the QB1 spot. Mariota is viewed as a good fit for offensive coordinator’s Josh McDaniels’ offense and he was considered a favorite to start at quarterback for the Patriots in 2021 earlier during the offseason.
