Do Your Job!
Well said. I'd add that wanting to trade up is different then the other team being willing to do the trade.I disagree with the first part of this statement. BB has always approached things with a "what's best for the team approach". This year signing the free agents and draft actions reflect "what's best for the team" as of now.
"What best for the team" can be very confusing without context. A certain action we wanted last year seemed obvious as "best for the team" then, but BB didn't act... "What's best for the team" isn't a current state question, but sometimes it is. It's a one week, one year, two year, five year multi-dimensional question.
If you are on the doorstep of a championship then "right now" has higher urgency than "for the next five years", but you don't trade five first rounders to fill the only gap left on your team. And if you suck a little you don't trade the best two players for two number ones in five years because a few wins now keeps your fan base a little happier and keeps the team morale higher.
Every point in time there's a different view of the next day, season, two seasons and five seasons. BB has been the far best in the history of the game at concurrently managing all of those time frames.... Even though he looks like a total dick in the process.
Now about Jones for Gilmore. I'd do that but only if we are not going to resign him. If we are going to lose him anyways, by all means make the trade.
I have to ask: Why would the trade Julio's contract when they cannot afford Gilmore?
