I disagree with the first part of this statement. BB has always approached things with a "what's best for the team approach". This year signing the free agents and draft actions reflect "what's best for the team" as of now.

"What best for the team" can be very confusing without context. A certain action we wanted last year seemed obvious as "best for the team" then, but BB didn't act... "What's best for the team" isn't a current state question, but sometimes it is. It's a one week, one year, two year, five year multi-dimensional question.

If you are on the doorstep of a championship then "right now" has higher urgency than "for the next five years", but you don't trade five first rounders to fill the only gap left on your team. And if you suck a little you don't trade the best two players for two number ones in five years because a few wins now keeps your fan base a little happier and keeps the team morale higher.

Every point in time there's a different view of the next day, season, two seasons and five seasons. BB has been the far best in the history of the game at concurrently managing all of those time frames.... Even though he looks like a total dick in the process.
Well said. I'd add that wanting to trade up is different then the other team being willing to do the trade.

Now about Jones for Gilmore. I'd do that but only if we are not going to resign him. If we are going to lose him anyways, by all means make the trade.

I have to ask: Why would the trade Julio's contract when they cannot afford Gilmore?

Imo that would be very stupid. Which leads me to believe they truly aren't in on Julio or Gilmore will be used as trade bait

The idea of Julio is sexy, I get it but the Pats loaded up on pass catchers in the off season I don't see this happening and not sure I would want it to. Gilomore is a solid piece of this defense, BB would rather have a solid D than another pass catcher. Then I think about the RB situation and O Line I really think BB and Josh plan to run a lot and use the new TEs to offset that run. Julio for Gilmore tosses a pretty big wrench in that cog.

Agreed but -
Julio would look pretty darn sexy in the Mac Attack!

It all still comes down to our plans on Gilmore. Do we extend him or not?????
(oh, and the specifics of the trade)

If we can extend Gilmore I would like to, but you know BB will not over pay so I think it comes down to what the sides feel is a fair offer

He's about a $23M hit on their cap. His three year $66M contract kicks in June 1.

He got a $25M signing bonus. If he's traded, they still have to eat the bonus, but they can spread it over 5 years. That frees up $18M of cap space and Gilmore would only cost them $7M because his cap hit includes the bump that he was given last year for being DPY in 2019. If Jones comes here and re-write his contract for 5 years at $60M he's easily affordable because the Patriots would have the $7M from Gilmore and they're $15.3M under the cap.

They still have to sign Barmore and jones too.

So they give him up for a 1 year rental? I know they are desperate but Gilmore is going to want a new contract.
Ideally, we trade Gimore for Julio and Gilmore plays out his contract and then comes back to NE.

The idea of Julio is sexy,

Bill generally does not go sexy.
Yes, he brought in Moss.
But he brought in Moss when every other position was set, up to and including WR.
We already had Jabar Gaffney who had performed well the year before, signed FA Dante Stallworth for a speedster with good hands and had traded for Welker.
How many of the top flashy Diva WR's have won a SB?

There were stories that Moss didn't take the super bowl seriously, meaning he already was counting the egg that would never hatch.... and the attitude rubbed off on others.

I never heard those rumors.
Before the game I was loking at the Giants. They remimded me of the Pats team that won SB36

Jabar performed well? What is your definition of well? His best season with NE he had 38 receptions and 2 TDs. He had 8 TDs in three years as a Patriot.

Stallworth was a speedster who did relatively nothing.

I've never heard anyone refer to Julio as a diva. Jones is the perfect NE Patriot. Just don't know if that body will hold up for 5 years.

Reports are saying that the Patriots have started backing away from a trade for Julio Jones. The Falcons apparently are screwing around and while there are still a couple of teams interested, the market is starting to get a bit chilly. The story is that there were seven teams involved and two decided that his contract was too rich. Jones said he wanted to play with Cam Newton and the Falcons saw a couple of more teams leave the table.
They must have assumed that the other teams would bump up their offers and that the Patriots would counter andthe Falcons would strike gold from a triple audience.

Bill doesn't play that game and seems to have cooled his jets. Now the Falcons will have a pissed off WR , a pissed off suitor and two teams that are hanging back and waiting for June 1st.

Is Bill playing a game? Is Bill seriously walking away?

Not a game. That is the business side of contracts. We see the game on TV, after the business is done.....

Two 100+ yard play off games stood out. Well enough to get a second contract with the Pats. Then come back again 3 years later. Well enough to gain TB12's trust, or no "freeze out". More Dependable than the guy that had been signed to be #1 WR.
Well.
Not great, not fantastic, not super, not outstanding, not phenomenal. Well.
Nothing more than well.

Stallworth was the one who got burned by Moss taking his job. He did relatively nothing because Moss got all the deep balls and Welker got all the short ones. He was an unneeded commodity.

Maybe Jones isn't a Diva. Neither was Megatron, Neither is Fitz, neither is Deandre Hopkins.

Followed by a lucky ass game ending dropped int right through the finger tips of Asante.

I don't actually recall where that play falls in the sequence of that drive but to me THAT was the play that doomed the Pats.

The drop happened a play or two before the "lucky ass escape, lucky ass throw and lucky ass catch). I see this play by Assante similar to the drop by Welker in the next SB, For all the good to great play, you ruined it by not showing up when you were needed MOST.

The Cleveland Browns have apparently thrown their hat in the ring for Julio Jones as have the NY Jets. The jets are reportedly prepared to offer a first round 2023 draft pick and a fourth rounder in 2022. Rumors are rumors, but the jets also have a warehouse sized available space on their cap.

It being quietly spoken that the browns have been talking with the Patriots about moving OBJ. You can be sure that if they've called the patriots, they've called the Colts, Broncos and every other team.

I'd like to see Jones here, but I'm not 100% sold on ONJ. He might be too much of a distraction for a team this young.

Totally possible the BB's "interest" in Jones is an attempt to get other teams to overpay for him. Not saying it is what's up but wouldn't surprise me either.

I'm all set with OBJ. I actually don't think he's that good.
