If Bosa really is seen as an elite edge rusher and overall player, you have to take him. Quality edge rushers are hard to find. They are expensive in FA and hard to come by as teams will extend them or franchise those players. The 49ers are projected to have approx $100 million in cap space with the carryover so they have room to add a couple of the other defensive needs in FA also. Even the 2nd round pick is just like a late 1st rounder

I would look to LB and safety in FA and CB and pass rusher in the draft. I'm offense I would look to add a guard in free agency.

Also I would still consider moving back a little if they don't grade Bosa head and shoulders better.

Said it before, say it again. If Bosa lands in your lap, you take him. Why get cute when a blue chip dude who checks every box lands in your lap....especially at the position of most need.

If some team is willing to get seriously bent over by forking several draft picks for SF to drop down some....and miss out on Bosa...I am OK with this only if they can somehow get Josh Allen or Jachai Polite (or maybe both) in a trade back up scenario. If they believe the pass rush class is as good as most everyone says it is, then they have to come away with a tier 1 dude.

Yes, definately a pass rusher and a corner in the draft. They could use a guard or a tackle depending on what is there. Staley isn't going to be around forever.

We'll that is kind of the idea, be able to move back and still get one of the elite pass rushers.

We're all on the same page really.

We might be describing the scenario a little different, and the opinions on Bosa himself will have a little difference, but we're really on the same page.

I'm fine with CB as the second pick and if value not there, SAM should get consideration too. The SAM isn't the primary rusher, but he is counted on to add on. I keep thinking of Ahmad Brooks who was getting 6 sacks plus lots of pressure.

Problem is there is only one.

Unless they get a 2nd first rounder and draft another pass rusher they can only get one of the elite pass rushers. I still think they should take another pass rusher later in the draft.

Yes, so to ensure we get one, don't trade down too far if trade down at all? We don't know if we'll get the 1st pick yet, maybe we end up 3rd or 4th, so trading down would then be too risky.

Not against this idea per se, but i think the free agent they sign will fill this 'second LEO' role?

What they should consider later in the draft, is adding a little more pressure from the other side, ie a SAM. i know the SAM can't be a 'pure' pass rusher, but someone who can "supplement" when needed.

I agree, however it to really depends on how they view the pass rushers if the grade them very similar then moving back isn't such a big deal.

Then you go go against the adage of never trying to force a draft pick because you need that position. Then you end up with a bust like Soloman Thomas. Don't draft a guy to fill a position if the guy is not good.

I'm not sure where you get this idea from what I posted. I want them to take a pass rusher the best they can when they are picking if that is #1 or a trade down, then take another larger in the draft probably from the third round back I'm not sure how that is forcing a draft position.

I thought you were saying take a pass rusher with their first pick when no good pass rusher is available. Don't take a mediocre pass rusher or a bust like Soloman Thomas just because you have that need. The Niners have many needs. if they can't get Bosa then get a Corner or a DLineman.

This is where it gets a little sticky, everyone has their opinion on just how good these prospects are? If you think a few are close at the top, you say trade down. If you think Bosa is clearly ahead, you say stay put an draft him. In the big picture we're all on the same page with pass rusher. But when you start getting into 'details', how you picture Bosa weighs differently.

i already saw articles saying this is a strong class for pass rushers. Clellin Ferrell might be close to Bosa? Josh Allen? Jachi Polite? Montez Sweat?

BTW - do shorter, stouter guys make for better pass rushers?

I would think so. They can't be knocked off balance as easily. Although Aldon Smith was tall and thin

""Dekoda Watson: He will be 31, and coming off an injury-plagued season that saw him twice land on injured reserve. He has recorded just six sacks in nine NFL seasons, but 1.5 sacks came in his season debut in Week 9 against the Raiders. After that, he faded to the background.""

Damn. I thought this guy was a rookie.

49ers offseason plan
FREE AGENCY: There is a reason it’s rare that game-changing edge rushers switch teams. Once a team gets a good one, they are not going to let him go.

The Raiders were the exception. They had Khalil Mack, and they traded him to the Chicago Bears.

The 49ers made a competitive trade offer for Mack, according to general manager John Lynch, but did not close the deal to keep Mack in the Bay Area.

Detroit edge rusher Ziggy Ansah is playing under the franchise tag this season. He missed six games this season with a shoulder injury. He is not expected to be tagged for a second year in a row.

With an estimated $70 million in salary-cap space, the 49ers have plenty of money available to spend.

The free-agent market could be thin at edge rusher, as teams are likely to prevent their top guys from hitting the open market. Among the players who could receive franchise tags are Demarcus Lawrence (Dallas), Jadeveon Clowney (Houston), Dee Ford (Kansas City) and Frank Clark (Seattle).

DRAFT: The 49ers are four losses away from answering their most pressing need. With four more losses, the 49ers will own the No. 1 overall pick and can run their draft card up to select former Ohio State edge rusher Nick Bosa.

Well, that was easy.

Even if the 49ers defy the odds and win a game or two down the stretch, their first pick is still likely to be an edge rusher. The second-best guy on their list could be Josh Allen of Kentucky. Not only does he rank near the top of the nation with 14 sacks, but he has generated five forced fumbles. On a defense that lacks playmakers and guys with a nose for the football, Allen could be a nice consolation prize.

Again, i think we'll sign a FA pass rusher even though it might be an Ansah vice Lawrence or Clowney. If it is an Ansah, we'll still take the top pass rusher whether Bosa, Ferrell, or whomever they deem best fit?

I wouldn't waste money on a mediocre guy like that.
