What's your take on that? If they are unable to come to terms and instead utilize the tag, would you be willing to offer him the "highest paid" player contract to acquire him from the Saints? Worse case scenario, the Saints match. They don't match we lose 2 first round picks. I think he has "elite" 4-5 good years left in him. What's your take?

Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints still far apart on new contract, sources say - ESPN

No, I would not. The niners are in the process of building up a dynasty. They will do that by not giving a ton of money to one great player but spread it around to a bunch of solid players.

Yes, the niners need a great QB at some point, but to give up on Smith when he showed so much improvement and Kaepernick and Tolzien, two young promising QBs being coached up, the QB situation might just solve itself.

I would rather have a game managing QB and have play makers elsewhere at first anyway. That is how the niners got started in the early 80s and how the patriots won their super bowls. Eventually those game managing QBs become play makers themselves.

The problem with this is we would most likely lose Alex in a bidding war for Drew Brees. I know some people might be in favor of this, but we would essentially have to turn our backs on Alex. Similar to what we would have to do for Peyton or Flynn. Is the risk worth the reward? Probably, all though i think the FO would disagree.

You can't offer a franchise tagged player a contract unless you are the team that slapped him with the franchise tag.

Interesting. What are the earmarks of building up a "dynasty" exactly?

Brees getting franchised would mean you had a shot at Colston though so that works out.

i've always thought brees would do better in a west coast offense. problem is, can we upgrade wr and get brees?

If we had Brees, we wouldn't be forced to make the same moves at WR. Crabtree, Morgan, Williams, Davis, and Walker would be a fine start with Brees at QB. Add a guy in the first three rounds of the draft and we'd be just fine.

Though to answer the question, I'm not sure I'd go with this deal. Two first round picks and a huge contract for a guy who will turn 34 during the season seems like a hell of a lot. We'd have a three-year window to win it all, probably. We'd likely be the favorites this year, but it wouldn't be sustainable.

we'd be wasting money if we don't surround an elite qb with some talent. it would be like giving a sugeon a plastic knife.

If he's healthy, and you want a HOF QB, go after Peyton, and you'll be able to pay him much cheaper than Brees, AND you'll save all your draft picks.

Because we no talent on our offense, right?

We have one of the best TE duos in the league, and one of the best RB duos in the league. We also have one of the better OLs in the NFC.

We have a bunch of #2 and #3 WRs, but like Crimson said we're likely to add another WR in the first or second round of this draft.

He'd also have the best defense and special teams in the league.

Let's stop acting like he'd be coming to a talent deprived team.

Unless something changed in the new CBA, that's not true. If Brees signs the tender no other team can negotiate with him, but if New Orleans tags him and he doesn't sign, he can sign and negotiate with anyone.

If we pursued that course, we would sign him to an offer sheet which the Saints would have 7 days to match. If they didn't match, they would get the 30th pick this year as well as our first pick next year.

if we sign brees and we go into the season with crabtree and morgan our top 2 wr's, that is just beyond stupid.

we have a bunch of shoemakers at wr. we can't have somone of brees' calibre throwing to that crap. we won't be bringing in brees to simply manage the game and in order for us to fully utilize brees, we need some wr's who can actually play.

Man you're hard on our WRs and OL.

If only you held the same standards to our other positions.
