throwing the ball up and hoping that your receiver can make an athletic play on the ball, is not considered hitting on the deep ball. Most would say the receiver made a great play.
Before i continue, what do you consider a "deep ball"? Anything over 25+, 30+?

stafford and brees throw the ball up on a regular basis. smith either overthrows it or hits the guy. we don't have a reciever that can go get the ball that's thrown up for grabs

It seems like Brees wants nothing but the most amount of money possible. He already won a Super Bowl, set a few personal records and put together a bunch of great seasons. I'm sure he still has the desire to win more Super Bowls, but I think his main priority is just getting a $150 million dollar contract.

NFL.com news: Report: Unhappy Brees doesn't intend to sign franchise-tag deal

But, if there is any truth to this report, it looks like he isn't very happy with getting the exclusive tag.

This is not a good sign for NO....So what options does he have i.e if he wanted to leave to another team?

He has little to 0 leverage now.

Brees upset with tag?
9:26 AM ET
Drew Brees | Saints

As we've seen in seasons past, some players are none too pleased with receiving the franchise tag, while others take it in stride. With a large crop of taggees this offseason (21), there will be some that refuse to sign their one-year franchise tender, and will be absent from offseason activities until something is worked out. And as it happens, the most high-profile member of this year's franchise tag class may be one of the men who refuses to sign that tender.

According to a report from WIST-AM in New Orleans (per CBS Sports), New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is "livid" about the fact that he was tagged and did not get a long-term deal from the club. The radio station cites members of the Brees camp for the intel.

Looking ahead, the two sides have until July 15 to agree to a long-term deal. If nothing is struck by then, Brees has to sign the one-year tender or elect not to play. While negotiating up until that deadline will not threaten the QB's participation in training camp, if nothing is worked out until then he'd be absent from the other offseason activities (mini-camps, OTAs, etc.).

- Tim Kavanagh

If he sits out, that would kill that team. I think Brees can get up speed quickly, but there's a good chance they'll be breaking in a new OG and two new WRs at a minimum. If he decides only to play the minimum number of games, might as well just rule them out.

He has little to 0 leverage now.

He can sit out the offseason and the first six games - or whatever it is to be active for the minimum. He can pull a Carson Palmer. He has options, though. And quite a lot of leverage given the Saints' exploding FO. If they let him walk, and lose tons of picks, etc., that organization could be set back 15 years.

I hope he does sit out, and it costs the Saints some games.

I think the Saints are the biggest threat to us in the NFC. More so than the Packers or Giants.

I would not want to have to go and play them in their Dome come January, we were fortunate to get them at home to get the home field advantage, crowd noise and natural grass instead of turf.

He wants 3 years @ $23 mil p/season.

The tag would only issue him about $14mil this year.

We're both agreeing that this battle with Brees and the Saints is ALL about the $$$, right?

Now, if he decides to sit as you are encouraging to do for 6 games... that $14mil (tag) would become an $8.75 million dollar contract for the 2012-13 season at maximum. So if it's really all about $$$, Brees has absolutely no leverage IMO.

If it's all about money, you're right. I think there's probably more to it than that, though. The guy isn't exactly hurting for cash. I think he wants to be the highest paid player in the league.

You're right, he would lose out on paychecks if he misses games. If he doesn't want that, then he shows up the day before the game and he plays 16 games. Or he pulls a muscle during warmups. At this point, I think the Saints need him more than he needs them. The franchise tag gives them some leverage, but not complete control.

I hadn't seen that until you mentioned it, but it looks like he did correct people referring to Brees as a great QB at the combine. I understand negotiating from a position of strength, but come on....

There could be real bad blood on this one. If Brees is pissed, he might just be willing to sit out 6 games.

What's the point in being the highest paid player in the league if the next year you're gonna get topped?

These contracts are getting ridiculous.

I'm surprised Brees is so adamant. That said, this is probably his last contract, or at least his last big one, and there's a very good chance he won't make it to the end of this one. I can understand that he would want more money in the early seasons.

Agreed. But every year there seems to be a new highest paid player of the league or certain position. Is there a roof on this benchmark?

Who knows? It's kind of the nature of the beast, and as long as there's a demand for the NFL, the best players will be able to demand huge salaries. At least it's still not to the level of baseball. But without guaranteed salaries, those first few years are really important to guys.

LOL. If I was a professional player in the league, that's a grimy stunt that I would pull to phuck with the GM & owner. LOL. I always wonder why players don't use that as a ploy?!
