The Washington Redskins lost big time in their preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens Thursday night, 23-3. But of course, it's a preseaon opener -- no one really cares about wins or losses. Below I'll share my game notes to help highlight certain performances against the Ravens.

Game Notes:

  • I really like what I saw from both of the Alabama boys. Second round pick Ryan Andersonspecializes in edge setting and he did much of that in his first professional football game. He plays with a lot of passion and physicality. I saw much of the same with First round pick Jonathan Allen. He had a very solid outing that ended with a sack -- which was really just a hustle play. Allen continues to show good hand usage.
  • LB Mason Foster had a really nice run stop on the play that Trent Murphy got injured. He did a nice job getting skinny and shooting up his gap right past the center to stop the running back for a gain of zero. Unfortunately, Murphy was injured on that play. It will be interesting to find out the severity of the injury. Although Murphy will be gone for the first month of football due to suspension, he's a guy that will have a key role when he returns.
  • LB Zach Brown's speed is going to really help the Redskins' defense, especially against the run. He has great sideline-to-sideline range, as he displayed early in the first quarter. Brown did a really nice job running down Terrance West on a wide left run. Then on the very next defensive drive, Brown did a nice job in the flats against a pass to the running back. I saw a lot of physicality and uphill speed from Brown. I think that's his game in a nutshell.
  • Rookie RB Samaje Perine looked very shaky in the first half. But, of course, it was his first professional football outing and mistakes are bound to happen. Perine looked a bit hesitant on a few runs, he had a fumble and also drop. But his first drive in the second half was solid. He was more decisive running upfield for a couple nice gains. He also did a good job in pass protection on that drive.
  • Rookie CB Josh Holsey had a really nice pass break-up in the second quarter. It was a touchdown saving play after vacating his left nickel corner spot -- showing great range to go across the field and break-up the ball. He did have a bad pass interference in the first quarter due to him not getting his head-turned around downfield. But I like his game.
  • Safety DeShazor Everett displays very good instincts, but he dropped a potential pick-six late second quarter.
  • Nico Marley isn't big (5ft 8, 200 lbs), but he's always around the football. He's like a little gnat -- just everywhere annoying an offense. Marley had a nice sack in the second half. He probably won't make the team, but I like his passion.
  • DL Phil Taylor had a really stout play on the goal line prior to Terrance West's touchdown. I noticed in training camp how nice of a swim move he has and it was kind of displayed on that play. He also had a really nice effort play earlier in the game chasing down Ryan Mallett. I think this is your day one starter at nose tackle.
  • WR Ryan Grant, of all people, had the play of the first half for the Redskins. Colt McCoy did a nice job stepping up in the pocket to deliver the pass. But it was a wobbly one and Grant did a nice job swallowing a big hit while catching the ball.
  • Outside of your usual stars like Trent Williams and Brandon Scherff, I thought every offensive line unit played poorly. There were a few bright spots, like Arie Kouandjio lead blocking on a nice run gain. Also on that Matt Jones screen pass. But overall, each OL unit had its struggles.
  • I thought second year DL Anthony Lanier showed some nice things in this game. He has great length and displayed some explosion in this game -- registering a sack.

Nico would be a great story, but realistically there is no way a 5'8" 200lbs ILB can play regularly in the NFL. When he is attacking, it might work. But every team would soon just run right at him. Having an athletic 300 lb OG bull dozing him with a 230 lbs RB right coming right behind play after play and his career would not be long. Plus, there is no way he can cover a 6'6" TE over the middle. They would just post up on him and there is little he could do. At best, he could potentially be a ST star on kick coverage. I'm pulling for him, but I just don't see it happening.

McCoy was the least of our issues..... the line looked ragged, I think Matt Jones finally gave himself a Colombian Necktie, and our new and improved defense showed shades of our old and unimproved defense.

IM hoping Jay does a good impression of Jon come Saturday.

I am going to defend the defense a bit. It is hard to judge a defense when it was on the field 90% of the time.

Still riding that Suds bandwagon, huh? Last night didn't give you and pause at all? Coach, I love you, but Sudfeld is not an NFL caliber starting QB. I'm not even sure if he is a backup QB in this league.

He may not be a three down player but if a guy can play football I am going to do all I can to keep him around. There are many ways he could be used. I am all in for this kid if he keeps playing like he did.

There is something to say about the contagious nature of his energy. He is the type of player you find a spot for.

I admit to being biased. I was a 125lb football player back in the leather helmet days. So I am always go to root for guys who are "too small" if they are a Redskin. The kids is a football player. He has the skills (at least so far) so I am going to root hard for him.

I think it is a bit early to say Clemons and Nico will make it. I do think they should get a look against better players now.

Sprinkle, I agree.

Not going to get to carried away with a preseason game however, both the OL & DL last night were a concern. I just might be reaching out to the Jets to strike a deal for Richardson. I like Allen and have hopes for Lanier, McGee and McClain however, I think Richardson can make us better now. Murphy gone for the season as it was reported.

HTTR!
