Who would have thought Martin Perez and Matt Moore would go 8.2 shutout innings lol
I hated the Matt Moore signing, but I’m pleasantly surprised with his bullpen dominance

Most shared your opinion of Moore. Funny how things come about.

Bullpen was another knock against the FO this offseason; not enough attention paid to it. They're having one of the best stretches in all of baseball at the moment. Sometimes things work out better than we expect them to.

I didn't have much of a problem with Moore as a minor league guy. I didn't have a problem with Perez as a just in case guy in ST, but would have rather signed him to a minor league deal like Moore. I never expected him to do anything like this.

He could be worth something at the deadline.

Yeah and we will probably need to trade for a few guys that are 3-4 years away and nowhere close to being rule 5 eligible.

Stop the presses. Evan has answered my Kyle Cody question. Of course it may have helped that I prefaced it with how many times I had asked various people the same question without getting an answer. He did answer though. Lol

"Kyle Cody, who underwent shoulder surgery last year, is not yet throwing off a mound. The projected return date on him is August. As far as I know, there have been no significant setbacks."

So he answered, but he really didn't have anything to say other than what was said when Kyle had the surgery. If he is going to return in August, surely he would be doing some long toss or something by now. Oh well, maybe when he gets assigned somewhere, we will hear about it.

I am definitely wanting to see how our team progresses including call ups before we jump into sellers mod at the deadline. If we sell we need to get guys who look like starters instead of role players

What about getting guys who look like they themselves could be included in a trade at the 2024 deadline when we need another piece or two. Guys who do not have to go on the 40 this winter.

I thought you didn't want to call guys up until right about deadline time. That would not leave any evaluation time for those call ups would it?

my expectation is that the Rangers are not very active at the deadline. they won't be in a tradition "sell" mode because of where they are in the rebuild. my guess is that they'll probably do a trade, sending their MLB spares to another team for MiLB spares coming back.

if they do pull off a trade of significance, I have to think it's for a controllable player of substance that will probably cost a couple of notable prospects and change.

of course there's always the possibility that they pursue another Howard-esque trade, sending a ton of value somewhere for another pack of magic beans.

I would prefer that for Leody. For Bubba at some point we will have to roster and would rather not carry him over unless he has a definite future
The relief pitchers including IL can come up when ready.

I was mainly thinking of Leody. I just want to be ready to retain people for next year if we exceeding expectations

we will need to clear at minimum 13 or 14 spots on the 40-man roster after the season just to add those prospects now in our top 30 prospects that would be rule 5 eligible: Jung, Winn, Foscue, Harris, Josh H Smith, Owen White, Acuna, Acosta, Wendzel, Hauver, Bradford. Kent, Thompson and Ragans

Most of the guys are short term, besides Gray. If we do trade guys and it looks like our prospects will be ready quicker than expected and that they will be ready to make is contenders in 2023, we could always go out and sign free agents to fill holes created by trades. In my opinion, if those prospects are on a faster track then we need to trade some guys to make room for those prospects anyway.

Actually, I cannot see us being contenders next season unless we make several major upgrades. I don't see more than one or two prospects being a major upgrade in 2023. If we sign free agents to upgrade, then again guys we could trade in two and a half months very well might be replaced by those free agent upgrades. I just cannot see a need to have to hold on to anyone not under control after next year.

If we decide to go with this 26-man roster after August 1, 2022, I would be fine with it. If they decide to keep one or two other guys that would be fine too. I just think we have some expendable guys if we can get anything of value for them.

Heim
Huff

Lowe
Semien
Seager
Smith
Wendzel
Ibanez

Garcia
Taveras
Thompson
Reks
Miller

Gray
Dunning
Hearn
Otto
Winn

Leclerc
Hernandez
Santana
Barlow
Bush
Snyder
Lee
Burke

That would require bringing up Smith, Taveras, Thompson, Wendzel, Snyder and Lee. We don't have to do this, but I would be fine with it if they did.

In Evan's answer about Kyle Cody he also had this to say about other injured pitchers.

Ryan Garcia, the 2019 second-rounder, is actually the closest of the injured-arm brigade to returning to a game. Garcia, who has five professional innings to his credit, is likely to head out to an affiliate by the end of May. Dane Acker, whom the Rangers acquired from Oakland in the Elvis Andrus trade, should be ready by sometime in July after his 2021 Tommy John surgery.

The two major league pitchers recovering from Tommy John — Jose Leclerc and Jonathan Hernandez — remain on track for late June and July returns respectively.
