It willguessing that will backfire.
Is the grade of Heim’s wrist sprain known? Sounds like a grade 2 but if it’s a grade 3 he’ll need surgery.
So we’re linked to every starter and reliever that is or may be available. That really narrows it downFrom Evan Grant:
With less than 100 hours until Tuesday’s 5 p.m. CT trade deadline, the Rangers are involved in trade talks for just about every starter or reliever available, two people close to the talks told The Dallas Morning News.
The Rangers have a deep farm system from which to deal. And according to multiple people with knowledge of their position, a willingness to take on salary that would push them over the luxury tax threshold for the first time in their history. The club’s payroll, for luxury tax purposes, currently sits at approximately $230 million, just $3 million below the tax threshold. The Rangers would pay a 20% tax on the amount above $233 million. ...
Nobody, though, would move the needle like the 40-year-old Verlander. It would likely require taking on another $14 million in salary this year and the Rangers would likely still try to add a relief piece before Tuesday’s deadline. It would also mean committing $43 million to him for next year, at age 41, with the possibility of another $35 million at 42 if he pitches at least 140 innings. Verlander’s contract also includes a full no-trade clause that would allow him to block a deal to any team. He did not show much interest in the Rangers’ during the offseason. The Rangers went for Jacob deGrom.
Those are all significant obstacles before ever getting to the cost in prospects. The market has favored sellers.
